Head. November on Hilton Head is the perfect crossover. Arts are in full crescendo.
0:55
Oysters are overflowing by the bucket and the holiday magic is lightening up all across the island.
1:01

1:06
parade route. It's all happening in November on Hilton Head. Stick with us. By the end, you'll know
1:12
what to book now, what's free, and the best family moves for the Thanksgiving week.
1:18
Let's jump in. All right. Well, welcome back. Thank you for having me. Lovely to see
1:24
you for November. Can't believe November is almost here. It is wild. This year has flown by it,
1:31
but I think we're all a little relieved that the rain has stopped and a little bit cooler temperatures.
1:36
Oh my gosh, the sun. Yes, it's been beautiful the last couple days. This this time of year, October,
1:43
November, it really is a special time. Aside from all the festivals you tell us about, the weather is gorgeous.
1:49
Yeah, the weather's perfect right now. Even if you don't go through the jam-packed calendar, you could just take
1:56
a deep breath outside and you're going to have a great time. I agree. I agree. Well, speaking of which, we've got a ton
2:01
going on in November. So, we're really excited to chat to you. So, let's start with the art and culture because there's
2:07
a lot in that section and then we've got some others that we'll go through. Yep. So, we are going to jump right in
2:13
folks and we are going to be Oh, first of all, like, share, subscribe, right? and let everybody know about what we're
2:20
about to talk about. Let's go into the Crescendo Celebration. Yes. So, the Crescendo Celebration has
2:26
been ongoing since September, and it really is um this time of year since it's not peak summer, you really have
2:32
more of a chance to really kind of highlight these arts and culture moments. There's a lot more activity for
2:38
people living on Hilton Head going and exploring, but it's also a lot of visitors come for those experiences.
2:44
But what is it? So, Crescendo is a it's a full art celebration. There's
2:49
different mediums. So, you're going to find orchestra performances. You're going to find um physical media art of
2:56
like galleries. You're going to find a lot of different mixes even to one of my favorite which is like the lantern
3:02
parade. We're going to get I'm going to talk about that in detail. Yes, for sure.
3:07
But, um November is kind of the peak of Crescendo just because it's
3:13
you're ending it's the end. It's the wrap-up, but it's the crescendo. It is the crescendo. Correct.
3:18
Hence the name. I don't know much about orchestra, but I do know. Yes. The crescendo. It's the It's the really the peak of it. But it's
3:24
it's nice because there's just so many different mediums and there's so many different events and the town does a
3:30
fantastic job of really promoting it and really getting the community involved because some of those different
3:37
categories, they wouldn't have that opportunity to get into in front of as big of an audience. So, so basically
3:43
there's something for everybody. What it sounds like to me in that and it's the month long. So, there's a lot to do.
3:50
A couple months longer. Yeah. Since it started in September, it's been ongoing. Oh my goodness. Yeah. So, it's there's been various um
3:57
concerts. There's been just events that are affiliated with Crescendo. And that's where that the town had stepped
4:03
in and really kind of made it more of an organized long ongoing event versus it being like
4:09
just the symphony orchestra having to put on their event just like so they really kind of made it more like even
4:16
the Nutcrackers involved like everybody's involved in Crescendo. Okay. And performing arts is well basically
4:22
it's the arts arts and culture on Hilton Head. Exactly. I think that having that
4:28
community office through the town has been a real game changer cuz I think it just and it also has a nice reference
4:34
point. So like they give us information and we're able to get it out to the public in a much easier way versus
4:41
people aimlessly going like where am I going to go what am I doing or what is there to do or if you're
4:46
interested in the arts and you can always find this on island events for anybody or hiltonhead.com.
4:52
Yes. I'm sorry. So, if you were to pick one as an insider, what would you recommend?
4:59
Um, I personally, even though I don't know anything about orchestra, I love orchestra events. Um, there's one in
5:06
Celebration Park in the month of November and I think it's just the amount of discipline and talent with
5:13
playing those kind of instruments and just like the the unison of them. I think it's just really magical and it's so nice to experience that outdoors
5:20
versus an indoor space cuz it can not feel stuffy per se, but I think it kind
5:26
of just feels more airy and it I think it kind of feels more like an orchestra that you'd expect here. Okay.
5:32
Yeah. A low country. Yeah. Especially Celebration Park. I mean, if
5:38
you haven't been to Celebration Park, folks, you got to come in town because that I think that what they've done down there is absolutely beautiful. It's
5:44
really become sort of a um you know an epicenter of the whole Kgnney area. True community park.
5:49
True community park. And so you're right, there's no better place in my opinion than because it's also it's um cuz as much as
5:55
venues are perfect for acoustics and everything, it's sometimes nice to kind of feel it a little raw. Yes. Out in the
6:02
wild, you're like, it feels like it's it's a little bit more moving in my opinion. So that's my can't miss. Okay.
6:07
But definitely check that out. Get on the website to check it out. Well, so before we kind of go on and talk about
6:13
holiday shows and festivals, I kind of just wanted to pause and talk about um a
6:18
powerful story that's been going on in the art scene here in Hilton Head for the last month or so. So, that's an
6:25
exhibit called that's called Redemption. It's at the art um of the art league
6:31
gallery. So, Redemption is by Terry Boowo. I love saying that name, but it's
6:38
it's really neat because um and if you don't know the name Terry Burllo, that's okay. One, his story is really really
6:45
powerful. It's one of those that will kind of pause you in a tracks. Um it goes from him sketching, doing sketches
6:52
um as a child, comic book sketches, and then moving into um actually learning to
6:57
paint right when he was 16 and incarcerated. So um Terry, do you know why he was incarcerated?
7:04
I have no idea. I don't look into that. That's okay. I I was just It just dawned on me at 16 years old. That's pretty
7:10
young. But that's why it's a story of redemption, right? Resilience, transformation, and hope. So, yeah, we
7:16
just wanted to talk a little bit about that. Yeah, it's it's a lot of what is at the the art league. It
7:23
getting to get that story about the artist is so moving and special, but he really is incredibly moving. the fact
7:30
that he was incarcerated and kind of found that character painting through a character program at the I think it was
7:36
Allenale correctional it's just it's you can see that it gave
7:42
him really like a lifeline and purpose which is really and just to be able to connect to the artist that way
7:48
with himself and that's what's so beautiful about his paintings right talking about that
7:53
and they and what's so it's funny is it was weird doing the homework on it there was a quote said art became my freedom
7:59
and my redemption. Y and I thought that was a great line because they say when you stand in front of his art, it almost feels like there's
8:05
that tug between the darkness and light. And you can imagine, right, here's this artist 16 years old growing up into a
8:12
young man and then having to express both, you know, both of that into one.
8:18
It's It was I I actually never seen it, but I would love to see it. But we should actually go down there, right? We should. I feel the same. I need to go
8:25
check it out because um I'm a big fan of Art Cornell is mentor
8:30
and um that's where you get that name um oh I'm blanking on it what it's called
8:35
um art for hope. Okay. So it's kind of in tie with art Cornell
8:40
play on the word of um both art and art. Um so it's just the connection to
8:47
that artist as well. And so I'm not even though I'm not familiar with this artist's work as much, it's it's really cool to see the connection between
8:54
mentor mentee. Yeah. And that's so important though, isn't it? In art that that mentorship, I
8:59
think you see a lot of that in the art world. So I have a question. Does he have any ties to the Low Country at all? Do you
9:06
know? I actually don't know. Okay. No, I don't I didn't see anything in my research about it. They've just bought
9:12
him here. He has to have a tie. Well, I don't know. If you know, comment. put it in the
9:17
comments for us. Teach us. We're all learning. I think too it's um especially it's you learn so much when you go to
9:25
these exhibits that you really get to experience so much and you get to learn the history of the artists a lot more
9:31
that way. Okay. Y Well, we have till November 7th. Exactly. At the art center. So if you
9:38
are Art League Gallery. Oh yeah. Sorry. Sorry. If you are anybody that's listening and you like
9:44
art with a heart, that's what it's called. I love that phrase, art with a heart. There's a meaning behind it.
9:50
Please check it out at the art uh league, right? Art gallery. Art league gallery through November 7th.
9:56
And the art league gallery um is in the art center. So that's where that gets a little confusing is
10:01
cuz it's on the se by the ticket window, right? It's near the box office. Yes. If you go into the back um bottom section. So it
10:09
can get a little confusing. There's not much signage on
10:14
people to pull up and be like, "Oh, I'm at the arts and the performing arts." There's a beautiful gallery within
10:22
and they always have really neat exhibitions. It's constantly changing. So again, check out um Hilton Head
10:28
Island. My brain is getting fried today. Hiltonhead.com.
10:33
Hiltonhead.com. Or you could go to the um Art League website. But there's something else that's really cool that I'm so excited
10:40
for you to tell us about called the Gallery of Gifts, which is happening there. I think this is cool.
10:45
This is so cool. Especially because of this time of year. November is the kickoff to the holidays.
10:51
Like it's I mean, as much as it is, and the Gallery of Gifts is so great um
10:56
because it's a really more uh approachable way to purchase art that
11:03
is like special and a keepsake. Yes. because they have everything um kind of under that $100 range. So, it's truly
11:09
like more of a a gift budget because sometimes there's beautiful work that is it's really an investment piece that
11:15
you're going to find there. But, it's just a lot of um it's really to kind of get away from just generic gifts that
11:22
you're going to find at every store or kind of reducing your just purely shopping online. Yeah. And I think just
11:28
having creative like toys and stuff and crafts for kids and just having these it's just a really really great way to
11:34
support artists in a in a single space cuz if you can bring your spending away
11:41
from national retailers and away from online shopping it really makes a huge
11:46
huge difference for the community. It does. Are you thinking about making a move to the Low Country? Whether you're
11:52
searching for the perfect home or you're exploring vibrant communities on the coast or dreaming of a new lifestyle,
11:57
we're here to help. Contact the David Dale team today and let's make your dream a reality.
12:04
And I I think this is good. So, if you're a local, Bluton, Hilton Head, Hartville, wherever. Where do they go to
12:11
to be able to buy a gift? Do they go to the art center or Yes, at the gallery. At the gallery
12:16
itself. from November 18th to um July, sorry, January the 3rd, they will have this
12:23
gallery set up of all different local artist, local artisans. You can go and buy a gift. So, don't go to Amazon. Don't go
12:30
to Walmart. Go down here, support a local artist, get something unique, get
12:35
something that's fun, get something for under $100, which is awesome. And there's kid-friendly things. There
12:40
are a lot of not just like for adults Christmas gift shopping, doing holiday
12:46
shopping. It's really nice to be able to because I mean school's out, you have more time with your kids. It's like to
12:52
go get go get a game or go get a craft that you guys can do together, right? And so even if it's not necessarily
12:57
something a local artisan made, it's you want to still keep these stores
13:03
around and these events happening. So yeah, reducing holiday spend away from
13:09
online shopping. What would be Well, I don't know if you had this when you were a kid. You probably because you're in Africa. I wasn't, but we used
13:14
to have this thing. Did I don't know if you had it Santa's workshop at schools. Yeah. Did you do that? That was so Oh, it was
13:20
so cool because what they would do is you would set up like a little um uh almost like a store in your gymnasium or
13:27
whatever and the kids could go in. We could go in and buy stuff for our parents, for our brothers and sisters. And did
13:33
you do that? We had um they would also do where I think it was kind of a way to trick you
13:39
would buy stuff sometimes that the kids would make. So sometimes parents could come also and coming in and doing like
13:45
crafts. Like we would make a bunch of sand art or something silly that we were like, "Okay, no one really
13:52
wants this." But it was just a great way to kind of get people buying things. That's awesome. So we'd get it at school
13:58
then would you w you you know you would wrap it and then you bring it home and give it to your family. So but that'd be
14:04
kind of cool to take like for Shiloh school, take the kids down there, give them a little budget and go buy some. A great idea.
14:09
You know what I mean? a good idea. I think it's just so nice to see, especially because it's time of year
14:15
locals get to kind of explore a little bit more and it really is the time of year because our tourism numbers are in
14:23
it's in the off season. Um, local shops need support more than ever. It is Q4 is
14:30
crucial for everybody to go. It's like that for everything. Real estate, it's the same thing. Like literally it's like after October it's
14:36
like sleepy town USA and and it's you know so December we're pretty much sbatical.
14:42
Yeah, it really is. Yeah. So I agree. So busy during the holiday it's really
14:47
just like if you can even just shifting $5 here
14:52
and there to a local spend. That makes a really big difference for a local shop versus just a retailer.
14:59
I agree. I agree. And you know, for those out there, just shift another $500,000 to a purchase on a condo at the
15:04
beach. I mean, that would be good, too. Great Christmas present. Perfect.
15:10
Sorry. I You're looking for something different. A beach at the house. A house of beach.
15:15
House at the beach shirt. You can buy me a beach house. Yeah, no problem. Well, there's also a lot of dance and
15:22
theater this time of year, right? So, we've got the Nutcracker. the Nutcracker, who is actually our cover
15:29
for November. Oh, is it? We try to keep it a tradition as much as possible to have the Nutcracker on the cover for
15:35
November because to me it is one of those staple Hilton Head pieces. That's what when I was doing research,
15:42
sorry to interrupt you. I to I picked that up that Nutcracker is just year after year. It's a staple here in Hilton
15:49
Head. It's really um field because it's Hilton Head Dance Theater that does the performance of the Nutcracker. It's just
15:55
it's so great to be able to have the young dancers have that kind of outlet
16:02
to do such a important Christmas event. So, I think it's it's really nice to
16:08
have student dancers being able to be where families are
16:13
going to go because people want to see the Nutcracker every year as many times. Can I make a confession?
16:19
You've never seen it? I don't even Okay. I'm so uncultured. I
16:24
confess this is on this is worldwide broadcast. Well, you can see it November 14th. Exactly. World 23rd.
16:31
Have you seen it? No. See, I'm not the only one. Gosh. And I I have an excuse. I'm from
16:37
Africa. You're from here. They don't have it in Africa. Is that like the only American? No, it's strictly American.
16:42
Is it I was like, is it a British story? I actually don't know. No, I don't think so. I think it's I think it probably I think it's American. Yeah, I've never
16:48
I have two questions and we probably don't have the answer. We might have to chat GPT it. But like what is it about
16:54
and why is it a Christmas thing? Like do you know by any chance? Oh, I mean the whole plot is it's
17:01
ballet. It's a it's a Christmas ballet. Well, I know I know but I don't know the story itself.
17:08
It's a bit hate us. It's a bit of whimsy. It's kind of got um there's sugar plum fairies. There's a
17:13
rat king. It's very much of kind of like a tale of like kids adversity against
17:20
it's like a good versus evil kind of like holiday magic story. And I think that's what's so nice is um you'll see the
17:26
tiniest dancers like they're some of those little dancers were like three four years old. Those girls were adorable.
17:32
You know what? I'm gonna go see it this year only because events has brought it
17:38
to my you have to see the Nutcracker at least once and you've probably heard the music more times than you've realized cuz and
17:45
so some cuz some of those beats are kind of like you just you're going to hear it and you're going to be like, "Oh, this
17:50
is what this is from." Um so even though you haven't seen the ballet performance, you've you've seen
17:57
it. It's it's it's in so many movies. It's in commercials. It's
18:02
it's kind of impossible. Can I take you on a date? Yes, please. Okay. What date is it?
18:08
November 14th through the 23rd. There are multiple performances. There's both evening and daytime performances. So,
18:15
there's there's not just one showing. Okay. Yeah. All right. But it's just a great way and it's supporting the the dancers because they
18:23
work so hard both in like in the costume departments and the whole stage production. Like it's a really big
18:29
group effort. It's not just the the dancers who are working so hard to make this thing happen. So, it's it's
18:36
nice to be able to support younger people really still doing that. It's and it's nice cuz it's
18:43
it's kind of getting away like it's it's good to see kids not just on a phone.
18:48
I was going to say everyone always say it. Yeah, I know. It's hard. We actually have two friends that have
18:53
daughters that dance in it. Oh, really? You have to go. Yeah. Yeah. I know too. You want to give
18:59
a shout out or no? Sure. Um, the Mccomies. Oh, Alex Alexa, she's a dancer in it. And
19:06
then so is Joel's daughter, Sunny. Sunny also broke is also a dancer
19:13
in it. No way. I know of it and I know how much practice they put into it,
19:19
but I've never seen it. I didn't, to be honest, I didn't realize it was open to the public. I thought it was just for
19:25
the family of the of the dancers. It's open to the public and it's encouraged for the public and I think people use it
19:31
as kind of a it's a kickoff to holidays is really kind of it puts you a little
19:36
bit more I feel so much better that I got that confession out but I haven't it's like a weight off my shoulders
19:43
right now like all right moving on to me it's like to me it's like if people haven't seen Star
19:48
Wars or something it's kind of like what like don't judge me where have you been but I'm like yeah the Nutcracker in Africa I
19:54
was going to say the Nutcracker yeah you have an excuse at least he has no excuse And it's been around longer than your
20:00
lifetime, so it there's no excuse there. Exactly. All right. Are you thinking of selling your home?

20:33
talk about our experience that having seen there go. I like it. I like it. All right. Well, there's another show
20:40
that's coming to the art center. Tell us about that. And this one is um not um student performers or um child performers. This
20:46
is Frozen at the art center. And so this is an actual production. and a
20:52
wolf. Unless you've been under a rock for the past uh 15 years, you've heard the Frozen songs.
20:58
Yes, we have. Much to my boys horror every time it
21:05
comes on. And I think it's nice cuz it's um it to me is not just for children. So, I
21:12
think it's going to be really I mean the songs have I think have kind of transcended past. It's not, but it is
21:18
it's also really exciting because some performances are at the art center are not as kid-friendly.
21:23
Yes. Um, and so I think this is a really great way for kind of like take your grandkids out or really just take the
21:30
family out because some even though I think all of the musicals and performances of the art center are
21:37
credible, I also have to remember that I have an adult attention span. That's the key because they can't sit
21:43
still very long. So, I think going to see something live that is so familiar
21:50
because some of these kids I forget that it I mean the movie's been around since their birth that they've watched it
21:57
multiple times a year their entire life. Yeah. So, it's really nice and it really is it's winter magic. It really is.
22:03
And it brings it live. It's not on a screen. It's right there in front of you. People are are acting it out. And
22:09
the only thing I always say is um especially bringing kids to performances, it's really hard um to not
22:14
quite sing along too much. I don't know per performers how they feel about it of
22:21
sometimes it's a little too if you're belting in the crowd, but I think kind of like I just did.
22:26
I was going to say just a little too much. A little too much. So I always kind of warn people I'm like do you see
22:32
why don't take them to the theater? But fortunately I didn't do anything during summer. I
22:37
mean, I wanted to sing everyone. Fortunately, though, the art center, the the sound in there is so incredible that
22:42
I think even if someone in the crowd were singing the loudest they possibly could sing,
22:47
you would still be able to hear everything coming from the stage amazingly. I agree. Yeah, I agree. Now, can the kids dress up as Frozen?
22:55
I believe they can. Yes. Um cuz it's not like a Disney World where you can't dress up for certain events. Yeah.
23:01
So, it's a great way to kind of bring that little Anna Elsa costume kind of dress all your Let them all dress up cuz
23:08
little girls love to dress up. Let them dress up in their frozen take take them to um the musical. And I'm ignoring what
23:16
you just said. I'm trying to skim over it. I was say there's going to be I don't like the No, I mean Yeah.
23:22
There's going to be lots of little snowmen there. Yes. Little Olafs.
23:27
Olaf. Olaf. Yes. Snowman. So, I think it's a great way to kind of it's exciting because it's it's a Disney performance,
23:34
but I think it's um it's just so familiar now to so many families. Yeah.
23:39
And again, that is the opens on the 26th of November. 26th. Yes. So, that starts at the end of
23:46
November. Um really kind of going um through December. Okay. So, there's multiple opportunities. It
23:52
might even go through January. I'd have to double check that um calendar. Okay. Um, but you you don't have to just see
23:58
it one performance on the 26th. Yeah. Yeah. And they probably have matineese as well, right? For the
24:04
younger kids, so it's not just evening. Just check out either hiltonhead.com on events or the art center itself.
24:11
Exactly. Yeah. All right. Festivals and food. You ready for this? Because there's a lot of
24:17
excitement. There are lots. So go ahead and tell us about the biggest festival that's coming to Hilton
24:23
Head. So the biggest festival in November on Hilton Head is concourse. Yes. Elegance.
24:29
I was going to let you say that. It's I'm only going to say it once. I'm going to call it concourse. But you say it tonight.
24:35
And I have been practicing it all day. I was actually thinking to myself, I hope I don't have to say that part.
24:41
The elegance. Yeah. Um it's uh for people who are not familiar with
24:47
concourse, which I won't say the rest. Um, it is a it's beyond an auto show
24:53
show, okay, on Hilton Head. So, it's not just a a classic car showcase. There's
24:59
planes, there's style opportunities. It's gonna like fashion, cars, planes.
25:05
Yeah. Really fall is the only way to describe it. But it's definitely more
25:11
a kind of like a cool industrial bring to the low country, but it still very
25:17
much has like a low country flare versus some of the car shows that you're going to see in the Northeast or California.
25:22
Where do they hold it at? Where is this done? Um, so I'm just curious. The Port Royal Golf Club. Yes.
25:28
Oh, okay. Yep. So over there. Um but some of the events like the ones with the planes um
25:34
that is held at the um private airport at the um there's the small plane
25:41
airport at the head airport. Okay. I didn't know that. And they have all kind of events associated with
25:46
Oh, there's so many different events you have to they have to check out the website because there's so many I mean
25:51
we couldn't list them now. I mean there's drives that you can take through the low country. I mean, there's just a
25:57
ton of But it's really nice because it's kind of it's a car show which is inherently and I'm calling it a car show. It is
26:03
more than just a car show, but it's it's inherently fancy. So, you will see some people dressed kind of like a little bit
26:09
more I was going to say furs and kind of the whole thing, but at the same time, it also is a lot
26:17
more casual than some um car like rotating car shows where it's it's you
26:22
don't feel unwelcomed. So anybody can really go and like you're drinking sweet tea. It's like it kind of is bringing
26:30
the mix of Hilton Head of kind of this um extravagance while also feeling very
26:36
grounded. And it's a nice mix that they've been able to accomplish with that that it's not
26:41
where you would show up and you're like, "Yeah, I don't own a car. I have nothing to do here." It's just kind of a it's fun.
26:48
It's a fun experience and a fun spectacle that you get to participate in. Wow. I'm curious about the planes.
26:54
Yeah, it's very interesting. The planes. Um, so kids are welcome as well. They are. So there are some kids events
27:00
or activities. Um, cuz it can be a little it's when you're thinking Yeah. Classic
27:06
card. Don't touch. No. Sticky fingers on those beautiful cars.
27:11
I'm like, so they even have like a whole kids zone. Okay. So, it's kind of a um not where
27:17
it's like drop them off for daycare and see you later, but there are kid activities. So, it's not just for older
27:24
couples to go enjoy. Yeah. So, what about some logistics? Because there's a lot of people. Do you
27:30
have any recommendations for parking or So, parking they they have shuttles.
27:37
Okay. And my recommendation across the board for parking in general is go early.
27:42
Yeah. if you can if if you can coordinate early that's always best. It just is easier for everyone. It's easier
27:48
for you. But I'm a person who's like I typically usually like to be 15 minutes early if I am like so good like today I
27:55
was late and I was like hey it's not a long time it feels like late. Um but it's just um really utilize the
28:02
shuttles. That's the reason they put them in place. Do you know where they start out from? Probably Honey Horn.
28:08
That's what I was thinking. Probably Honey Horn. I'd have to double check exactly where they start from. Um they it's going to
28:13
be on the concourse um website and on our site as well on hiltonhead.com you'll be able to find um where the
28:19
shuttles go from but they it's the way I mean you get dropped off right exactly where you need to go.
28:25
Okay. So that's October 29th through November 2nd. Is does it start like early in the
28:30
morning and run all day or is it just different? There's different events. So, um, they have a very, um, laid out
28:37
calendar already of the events, so you can kind of pick and choose what you're interested in going to see. So, if
28:43
you're wanting to go see classic planes, like if that is your interest, that's what you should be looking up.
28:49
Um, or if you kind of just want a little mix, you can kind of go to different events throughout the I think it's
28:55
How many days is it? Five, six days or five? I Well, the 29th through the 2nd, there's only going to be like four days. And by
29:01
the time this airs, so this is going to air next week. So, you know, you're going to have to be on it. It's basically this weekend, you know, for
29:08
all. That's true. But also, it is a reoccurring event. So, if you're hearing about it for the first
29:14
time here, it is going to happen next October and November as well. Okay. So, you can always kind of save the date
29:20
and you can um if you're hearing about if you're watching this episode, say mid November, you can see pictures and
29:26
videos from this year's and you can really kind of decide if like if that's something that you maybe want to travel
29:32
to Hilton Head to come. That's great. And it's always great, too, cuz um that time of year, you're
29:37
going to get great deals on vacation rentals, on hotel stays. Um you really get a lot more bang for your buck in
29:44
October, November. So someplace that may have not been an option for you to stay in peak July, you
29:51
might have this amazing house to rent in November, and then you get to go to a really cool event. Yes. And see classic
29:58
cars. I love it. Well, this event does look amazing, so please look it up on their website. Um,
30:04
another great festival which Yes. And we're not even going to be in town.
30:09
I know. I'm out of town as well. November the 7th and 8th. So, tell us about
30:15
I'm so sad to miss this cuz I'm going to be in Texas November 7th and 8th, but it
30:20
is the Hilton Head Oyster Festival. I am not an oyster eater.
30:26
I remember you telling us that before. I to me I'm so passionate about oysters in
30:32
the community. Yes. That I'm like I want people to love oysters whether they're eating them but
30:38
also recycling the shells. Like I just want people to be aware of what oysters mean to Hilton Head Bluffton in the Low
30:45
Country. It's part of this this community. It's part of our culture. If we had like a a symbol that I think
30:51
an oyster really should be. Yeah. Yeah, like it's a toss up between a dolphin or an oyster, but I'm like
30:57
I think I think too potentially. No, I mean remember the first time we
31:03
walked on um Pine Island that beach on Pine Island Beach in Hill Plotation?
31:08
It's all got oyster shells. I'm like I've never seen these shells. This is when we first came first time
31:14
experiencing oyster shells. Yeah. Just it's just so many on the for me cuz I'm like I I was born
31:20
You grew up with it. I've never experienced a day not around an oyster shell, which has blown me away that you're not
31:26
an oyster. I mean, I never had them until I moved here, right? Um, yeah, the two most typical ways to
31:33
eat oysters is roasted like or kind of fried or and raw is the the options.
31:40
And I think because I grew up here, they they kind of catapult you straight into raw. They're like,
31:46
you're you're an oyster girl. like you're going to eat raw oysters and I was not I didn't understand that to be
31:54
with you. I'll do steamed. Steamed was get close to raw because it's that still that
31:59
similar technique but I love oyster roast is so good. Um not related to the Hilton Head Oyster
32:06
Festival which I will um explain more but yeah when I was young um I went to Bluffton for schooling and we would take
32:14
um like a field trip to the oyster factory. Mhm. I think we were just doing labor. I just
32:20
remember making Now that I think about it, I'm like, I think we were just I think we were just
32:27
shucking oysters and raking oysters cuz we would just go out with rakes and shuck oysters.
32:34
So, you would go and get them from the water and bring them in. We would just be raking cuz there you'd have to keep things smooth and kind of
32:40
rake all the oyster shells. So, I'm pretty sure they call it Yeah, I think we were just I think we were just going
32:46
on a field trip. But, I mean, it was very important because you you needed kids to
32:52
understand the importance of the if you're growing up in Bluffton, the importance of the May River was
32:57
essential. And so, we would spend a bit of time over at the the oyster factory and go do
33:02
a little bit of work. So good. Um, and then they would you would eat the oysters just from the table.
33:09
Wow. Just the raw oysters. And that was not your favorite part. No, no, no, no. Well, I know we've digressed a little
33:15
bit, so hang in there with us. This is more for folks that haven't um are not familiar, but I wanted to talk about the
33:21
May River oyster is very different than say an oyster up north, right? Yes. So,
33:26
what's what's the difference? Um you can um we have actually a ton of
33:31
amazing articles about oysters on our sites that are decades old. They're um
33:37
we've had nature writers write about them for years upon years upon years. It's uh and I've learned even more since
33:44
working with my company than even growing up next to the May River is oysters. You have to return the shell of
33:52
an oyster to where it came from. Okay. For to reproduce. It's cuz they're filtering the water and
33:58
like reproducing the oyster. And they're different in every single
34:03
waterway. So oysters are going to be even different from Savannah to Charleston.
34:08
Yeah. Which is wild that different. And so you cannot return
34:14
an oyster shell that you got from Bluton if you're in Mount Pleasant.
34:19
You can't you can't shove it in the water there. It's like it almost is like they're going to reject it. Wow.
34:24
Really? That's amazing. I didn't know that. That is fascinating. You probably could get away with it more than you're not putting a Massachusetts.
34:30
I was going to say. So it's there might be like okay your neighbors but it is um
34:36
it's really amazing that they like it knows where it's from. That is wild.
34:41
No the May ruba oysters are smaller right than say the mass the it depends. It's like um
34:47
cuz they're in their clusters and everything but it's um the actual oyster itself oyster itself the edible part is going
34:54
to be smaller. So, I think some people might think it's not ready or but it's
35:00
it I mean the people who've been chucking these oysters have been doing it for generations upon generations.
35:05
They're going to give you the best oyster and one of the best places to get it is the oyster.
35:11
So, real quick, cuz we haven't talked about it. Where's the oyster festival held? What's the location? Shelter
35:18
Cove. I was going to say I was going to say it's Shelter Cove Community Park is what I had in my mind, but I was like,
35:23
is it at Honey Horn? No. Community Park, uh, November 7th through
35:29
the 8th. Yes. Okay, perfect. From 5 to 8:00 p.m. 5 to 8:00 p.m. 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
35:36
Awesome. That's a long time to eat some or you can eat Easter. Easter places to
35:41
watch. What is wrong with Easter? Or you can eat Easter um for the ticket,
35:49
right? Do you know how much the ticket price is? Um, I I'm not familiar with ticket price. I didn't look that up yet. But
35:55
it's always a great value, especially cuz um for one, oysters can get quite expensive when you're
36:00
Oh, yeah, for sure. Um which is why when everyone anyone hosts an oyster roast? Or wait, $5. No, I lied. $60 for an
36:09
adult. Okay. And 45 for children under 10 years old. That's cheaper than dinner at a lot of
36:15
places. 100%. 100%. Friday night VIP experience is $750.
36:22
Oh wow. for a VIP experience. 750 bucks. But that's a group of 10, right? Yeah. Is your mic on?
36:29
You can turn your mic on, by the way. No, it's all right. We're good. Thank you, buddy. Okay.
36:34
Well, that's good. $750 for VIP for 10 people and $60 for adults and 45 for children. All you can
36:41
eat. And it's not just oysters, okay, which is really great because there's um there's barbecue, there's hush puppies,
36:47
there's desserts. So, it's not where you're having to eat where you feel $60 worth of oysters, which honestly at a
36:53
restaurant is not that many. No. Um, so it's a really great experience to kind of um get because if you fall in
37:00
love with it, if you like, okay, I'm a roasted oyster person. I'm a steam oyster person because there's going to be different types as well. You're
37:06
going to ask that. Yeah. So, you can pork, shrimp, grits, chili. Hold on. All you can eat pulled pork,
37:13
uh, grits, shrimp, chili. Low oysters and low country broil.
37:18
Low Country Royal. Okay. So, I mean, listen, if you're in town or you're not familiar, first of all, Shelter Cove,
37:24
beautiful, awesome place. Sunset over there is amazing on Broad Creek. Got a ton of other things to do. You got
37:30
places to watch football, you know, if you're there on Saturday, college football, pro football, all that stuff. So,
37:35
great spot. They do discounted tickets, too, on Saturday. Discounted tickets on Saturday. Well, there you go. So, there's so many
37:41
options. And I think too is with all of the different food um particularly at that price point for that 60 or 45 um
37:48
even different sauces you're going to get a completely different meal which I since I don't eat oysters I'm not as
37:55
familiar but I'm like some people put barbecue sauce there's cocktail sauce there's hot sauce there's like it's not just one sauce it's almost like this is
38:03
like a little outlet of you can just put anything you want on it and have a totally different experience so it's you
38:09
can really kind of mix it up but so I have be out of town. I have a plan. Oh man.
38:14
We're all going to go see Nutcracker so we can see it for the first time and then we're going to go eat oysters with
38:20
you. We have to be cuz she's out of town and we're out of town. She decides she'll
38:26
I would go to experience the live music. I will eat my weight in hush puppies. Um
38:31
I'll eat my puppies. It's all I will watch us eat the oysters. I will watch everyone else participate in the
38:38
oysters and I will be happy that people love oysters because I do think they're very important to the community.
38:45
So we'll wrap up this segment real quick. I want to for there's live music as Erica just said and it looks I have
38:50
on my notes here. There's an afterparty at the bank. There is an afterparty. So at the bank
38:55
which is on Pope Avenue um not too far from Calgney Circle Plaza. Um there's an
39:02
afterparty where there's um you're going to have bands on the stage there. Um and if people have not been to the bank
39:08
before, it's a really great outdoor space in an old I knew that building as
39:13
Bank of America. I was saying that was I think our bank when I was a kid. So it's it's really cool to see that space
39:20
transformed. They've got various um standing food trucks there, but it's going to just be a place to get drinks
39:26
and kind of celebrate. I mean, the party does not stop at Shelter Cove. And it's
39:31
another way to kind of bring your patronis to like to another local business in another area to kind of make
39:38
your way around the island supporting multiple places. I agree. And I think the bank is so
39:44
representative of the low country because the outst gathering. I mean, everybody's out there
39:50
playing games, obviously listening to the music, and it's just cool if we had like a real talk shuttle
39:56
bus and we were able to party bus a portable podcast.
40:01
That would be a You're a visionary live interviews. I love it.
40:07
Do you want to do Yeah. Reporting live from the bank? Would you be one of our a guest
40:13
reporter? Possibly. Maybe. As long as you've given her hush puppies
40:18
and a beverage maybe if you get me a pizza at the bank.
40:23
There you go. There you go. All right. Well, let's move on. Um, how much?
40:29
Okay. Sea Pines Bonfire. I did not know this existed. And this sounds like a ton of
40:34
fun. Something that you would love. I would love this. November the 14th. Yes. So, the Sea Pines's Bonfire is um
40:42
there it's the catering and food is done by Salty Dog. Okay. Um, but it's a
40:47
really cool sea pines and it all is to benefit the forest preserve. Okay. And it's in the forest preserve,
40:54
isn't it? Correct. Yes. They have it in the So, um, it is $100 per ticket. Um, so
41:01
it's a little bit more than some of the other festival tickets, but it really is um it's a big fundraiser for the forest
41:08
preserve, which if you haven't spent time in the forest, I know we've talked about like biking through there and everything. Um, it is one of the most
41:15
important areas in my opinion of Hilton Head. So, being able to kind of experience a bonfire.
41:21
I know. That's why I love So, salty dog food and un an open bar, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
41:28
I believe it's just non-alcoholic drinks, the open bar portion, but I think you can purchase alcoholic drinks,
41:33
but you'll have to double check on that one because I don't want to promise open alcoholic. Yeah, for 100.
41:40
Do you know that um sodas and everything are included? So, it's a great way for families to kind of really get a mix.
41:46
So, the food's included with your $100. Correct. Wow. Okay. And there's a lot of different food
41:52
options. Yeah, there's a ton. You'll have to look on their website. And they have their whole menu of what they put the bonfire
41:59
at. I wonder I mean it doesn't really say be curious to see where they put it, but
42:04
And it's nice because I mean obviously it's going to be very regulated. Don't do not go lighting bonfires throughout
42:12
Hilton Head. As much as our we we're very fortunate to have very um wet grass. It's like do not go lighting
42:20
fires without permission. Amen. So, do you know what time that starts
42:26
and when people should kind of start arriving for it? So, that one again, always go early. Um
42:32
plan to get there around sunset. So depending on the time of when sunset is, that's around the time you should go.
42:39
And like always, bring bug spray. Even in November. Even November, which I know is it's a
42:45
little hard for some people to think of that mindset that there is still bugs in November, but it's the low country.
42:51
There's going to be something out there. I was literally sitting on our back porch this afternoon and there was a mosquito. I'm like, aren't you going to
42:57
be gone? It's cool this morning. There's a mosquito. Stop. The important thing too is um because some events don't
43:03
allow them, you can bring chairs and blankets. So, I encourage you because there's going to be live music.
43:09
Yeah. Per experience it. And um and it's just having getting comfy and
43:16
especially if you go around Santa. You're going to be kind of settling in for a while. You don't want to just be standing the entire time. So bringing
43:23
whether you have little pop-up chairs, um nothing too bulky, just to allow space for everyone else, but some
43:29
blankets and little kind of picnices, it's like an evening picnic.
43:34
That would be so much fun. You know what I love about all these events? Live music, live music, live music.
43:40
There's a theme cuz the weather's so gorgeous for it. You know, I try to tell everybody. Yeah. I mean, there's also just such talent on Hilton
43:47
Head, whether it's kind of like the newer performers, um, some friends of mine like the uh, Algorithm and Kyle
43:54
Worm and Nick Pool and some of the younger guys, but there's also like some of the the Hilton Head Classics like
43:59
Target the Band who are going to be at the bonfire. Okay. So, is that who's playing? Yes. And it's kind of a um, for if
44:06
you're not familiar with Target the Band, it's um kind of like a mix of like beach tunes and classics. They're
44:11
definitely going to play um a lot of covers that you're familiar with. Okay. So, it's a great way for kind of like sing along
44:17
full generational experience so you're not just only the current radio hits.
44:23
Okay. Of sorts. That sounds like fun. Can we put that on? I'm literally like, "Okay,
44:29
I told you every single weekend and during the week
44:34
there's something going on." could ask Shiloh to be not playing in every travel. I think too it's I think sometimes
44:40
November can sometimes be skipped over because people are thinking of Thanksgiving. So sometimes hard to kind
44:46
of incorporate some of these other weeks. So honestly since you're going to be doing so much um cooking and shopping
44:52
for Thanksgiving, some of these all you can eat places I'm like that is just go you're you don't
44:57
need more stuff in your fridge. You need to create space for all the leftovers for that week. It's a great point. You're full of great
45:04
points today. Um, all right, last one is the local pie is celebrating 10 years.
45:10
Yes. And that's what I was kind of saying like eat out as much as you can for November because you're going to have a lot of leftovers at the end of
45:16
the month. So local pie is a pizza um place on Hilton Head over off of
45:24
New Orleans Road. Yes. Um so New Orleans Road and this is Ice Cream, right?
45:29
Yes. It's right by Hilton Head ice cream. Mhm. It's right by Hilton Head Ice Cream um in Fountain Center.
45:35
Golf spot. The golfic chronic golf. Hold on. Hold on one second bud. And they have um Yeah, everything in
45:41
Fountain Center. There's a lot of businesses to kind of explore around there, but uh Local Pie is there for 10
45:47
years, which I cannot believe they I can't Yeah, I can't believe it's 10 years already. And they're just um celebrating by
45:53
they're going to have great prices on pizzas. Um so it's just a really affordable way to go out. And they have
45:59
um uh Cranford Hollow playing which is like a big a classic Hilton Head band um
46:05
who kind of started not around the same time as when the local pie was opening.
46:10
So it's just a way to kind of celebrate their space there and they are expanding so much. Um they have a location already
46:16
in Bluffton in the prominade but they're opening a third location um over in New Riverside.
46:22
Oh wow. In a plaza I love that over there. Yeah. Um, so they have the one with Publix,
46:28
but then the new brand new one across the street. So they're in the brand new one across the street. So um, they are
46:34
moving over there or not moving but opening up their third location and
46:39
Frosty Frog, okay, is opening right next door. That's where Olive and Fig was going to go right out there.
46:45
So for people that are moving to the Bluffton area, there's ways to to experience local pie outside of just
46:51
I love their pizza. I love the woodfire. I like that wood fire. What's your favorite pizza? Well, I'm a vegetarian, so my options
46:58
are always I usually only have like three to four options. Um, but what's really nice is um because all the
47:05
ingredients are so fresh, you can really kind of mix and customize. So, even if I'm not just getting the veggie lovers,
47:11
I can kind of take pieces from of the other pizzas to really make Yeah. something my own.
47:18
Yeah, that's awesome. Are they doing any um limited runs for their anniversary?
47:23
Liber runs flavor. I believe they're bringing back some retired flavors of sorts. Um I say
47:29
flavors. Yeah, I know. I said flavors. I threw your What would What do you call them?
47:34
Well, you know they have specialty pizza, you know. Specialty pizza. Thank you. That's the word. I have definitely cannot get my
47:40
words out right today. She was not day drinking. No, I was not. I wish I was. I should
47:45
have been. What's nice for that one is it's um it's not just one day. It's November 7th
47:52
through the 9th. So, it's a couple chances to go get the great deals cuz I mean $10 pizzas, you
47:57
can't you can't get a frozen pizza for $10. Not even. Yeah, they are way better than the Desjouro. No offense to Desjouro.
48:06
Awesome. All right. So, we have a special company that we want to talk about.
48:11
Yeah. So, um, a company that I want to highlight, especially this time of year, um, is when you think in some of the
48:19
previous episodes I talked about water activities that being so heavily associated with the summer
48:25
is you don't think about water activities as much in the fall. Yeah. Which is
48:32
it's honestly the best time to go out on a boat is in the fall. And the company that I wanted to highlight is Island
48:38
Head. Um they are they have multiple they the amount of activities that they
48:44
offer. They have habachi cruises, low country boil cruises. Oh wow. Um they do parasailing not this time of year. Um
48:50
that kind of and they take you over to DeFuski for day trips. But something that they've added this year is they've
48:58
kind of added um more uh experiences for corporate groups for
49:04
holiday parties. So, that's what I kind of wanted to talk about this time of year is when you're thinking holiday
49:10
parties, um you could go support a local business who needs business this time of
49:16
year. All right. So, th this month we definitely wanted to highlight somebody. Yeah. So, um as I mentioned in more of
49:23
the summer episodes, um which is a time of year that you really think about being on the water, you think about
49:28
water activities like parasailing, jet skis. Um but the boats are still running through November. Um, and one of the
49:35
company that I wanted to highlight is Island Head. Okay. Um, they have just they have so many
49:40
activities from dinner cruises which are operating still this time of year. They have tours to defy. They have dolphin
49:48
experiences, sunset cruises, but they are one of, in my opinion, one of the most fantastic companies for planning
49:55
corporate retreats, holiday parties, um that they accommodate and it's a real luxury experience. And they even have
50:02
some popups where um you can do yoga on the boats. Oh wow, you do yoga. They bring they
50:08
bring um they I think they partner with various um studios and they even had um I think it was like
50:15
a plastic surgeon's office or something. I don't think they gave Botox on the boats, but they they're they're just um
50:22
boating with Botox, but they have like they have a brunch cruise um on their sailboat and it's
50:29
just it's a really unique experience for holiday parties. And I think this time
50:34
of year, um, especially, you should be booking early. Yes. Um, it's, so, November is a great time
50:40
for planning. If you're whether you're coming into town or you're a local business in town and you want to have a
50:46
really unique, special experience. Um, they're able to accommodate so many because they both they have the dinner
50:52
cruises, they have the yoga cruise. Like, they have so many different options for you to kind of explore.
50:58
We're going to have to explore that because not just for us but any hey all you real estate agents out there client
51:04
appreciation events island head island and um and you also
51:10
tell them our secret you're going to figure it out right
51:15
since I can share the code you get a 10% discount off of all of their activities. I'm not sure on um holiday parties you'd
51:23
have to talk to them individually for that one but the code is events 10. Okay, event
51:28
10. So that's 10% off. So if you even if you want to do something as small as a trip
51:34
to DeFuski or if you want to do a dolphin tour um that time of year. So if you're not looking for a full holiday
51:40
kind of experience. Um but the most popular activity is the Habashi cruise. It's really I've heard
51:47
that's fantastic. Really fun. And um the guys who do the
51:52
the chefs, they're they're so entertaining. It really is kind of dinner in a show. Yes. Um, but it's if you don't have
51:59
access to a boat, it's just such a great way. Do you know where they go out of which marina? So, they have two options. So, they're
52:04
both from uh Hilton Head Harbor over on the northn north end. Is that what's
52:09
called? I'm blanking. Yeah. Um, Safe Harbor or No, probably the one uh by Hilton Head Plantation.
52:15
Yeah, that's Safe Harbor. Okay. So, so they're over um there and they're also out of Broad Creek.
52:21
Okay. Awesome. So, they have different activities with the different boats. Um because I think sailing and the habachi cruises are out
52:28
of Broad Creek. Okay. Um and Broad Creek is now especially with the um the Cross Island no longer
52:35
being a toll. It's accessible Yeah. from so many different outlets. So it's really a great way. Fantastic. So they can find what can
52:42
they find that co uh that code as well on hiltonhead.com? They can. So they can find that code um
52:47
for reference point because that is a we for large groups that's a cost 10% is
52:53
not 10 events 10. heard that on real talk. Well, I think that's great. And also,
52:59
you know, one once again to reiterate, helping local businesses through the
53:04
winter months. This is a great way to go out and get an awesome time for yourselves and support
53:10
the community. I was going to say because those boat captains and boat owners, they still have to pay their insurance this time of year. They still have to pay their
53:16
marine dockage. They still have to keep staff staffed as much as possible because you don't want to lose your
53:21
incredible staff season. So supporting them in unique ways is a really it's
53:27
great and and especially if you're coming to town this time of year, you get discounted prices. You get
53:34
kind of a more like it's just you on the boat. You almost get like a private private tour
53:39
a private tour cuz they're still operating. really the um the months that you're not going to see water is um
53:45
January and February. Yeah. And that's when they pull the boats to do maintenance because they require a lot
53:50
of maintenance and they got to make sure that they're Coast Guard certified to get you out on the water for March.
53:56
Yeah. So, I'd say too, hey, listen, if you're in Charlotte, if you're in Atlanta, if you're in Augusta, Statesboro, anywhere
54:02
out there, get down here during this time of year. It's the best time of year. Take you two or three hours. Just
54:08
come down and make sure you do all these events. So, all right. No, cuz as much as we think
54:13
it's cold this time of year, even just like you said, like Charlotte or Atlanta being 4 hours away, Yeah.
54:18
it's so much warmer here. Beautiful. Makes a 10°ree difference.
54:24
All right. So, the next section that we want to talk about is huh.
54:30
Okay, that's fine. Don't worry about it. We're good. Thank you. Um, the next segment is family and
54:35
outdoor fun. So, there's a lot of things that we want to touch on here. So, one
54:41
of probably our favorite events, we would all say, tada. Drum roll please.
54:47
Lantern parade. Hilad's famous lantern parade. It is so
54:53
magical is the only way to describe it. I I skipped it for a few years and I was
54:58
like, what am I doing? This is incredible. Yes. I I wish it was maybe if it was
55:04
every day would take away a little bit of the magic, but there's something about seeing the lanterns
55:09
and growing. Yep. Crescendo. Well, it's growing every I we were involved in the very first one.
55:14
The very first one we did it was Asher School Island Academy. Asher, remember that our first lanterns were
55:21
just those little paper round ones and we still have them in the glued a couple things to but just a little stick and
55:28
we're like, "Oh, this is so cool." And then we get there and you see these people with these incredible
55:34
Yeah. like four, five, six people, you know, with butterflies and So, let's back up before we go there.
55:40
For somebody who is not aware of the lantern um parade, let's just give them
55:46
30 seconds. What exactly is it? So, the lantern parade is a community
55:52
event where everyone can it is not a parade where you have to be the spectator. You're you're in the parade.
55:58
You can be in it or you can be out depending what you can watch it from a distance or you can be a part and you don't have to sign
56:04
up for official parade route. Um you just show up and you show up um with there will have
56:11
options to have lanterns there, but you can bring your own lanterns. Like you said, some people come with
56:17
professional incredible like dragons and and dolphins. You know, I got to find last year's I'll
56:23
have to put it as an overlay. So, if you're watching the video, well, if you're listening, watch the video because we'll put an overlay from last
56:30
year. From last year. Oh, it's beautiful. But you, so you get the professionals, but then you also get all the way down to
56:35
homemade. You get and I mean some of the homemade ones. Wow. Very nice for real.
56:41
Our homemade me correct? But and you can tell that it's definitely like made by kids and it's
56:48
just really special. Um, the only thing that I have to be uh is it's not flame
56:53
lanterns. Yeah. So, um whether you bring your own electric tea lights or they provide or
56:59
help provide them for you, um it is not a flame. And what's really neat around the island
57:06
starting about now, if not already happen, I know there's workshops at the art center that you can go and they'll
57:12
help you build your workshops at Coastal Discovery. Coastal Discovery. Yep. And then the
57:17
schools, a lot of the the schools get together and the kids make the lanterns and they go as a school which is a lot
57:24
of fun. Yeah. You know, it's so much fun. Yeah. And you're walk If you haven't done it, you're actually walking on the beach.
57:30
Yes, you are. So, let's talk about that, Erica. This this year's route starts at Adler Lane. So, it starts at Alder Lane
57:37
Beach. Yes. And it um travels down to South Forest Beach and it ends at Low
57:42
Country Celebration Park. That's what I love that they added because it comes all the way up Pope and and I love it.
57:49
You just form a little walkway they come through. It's beautiful. And again to all the other points, be
57:55
early because there's a lot of traffic and sometimes you have to park off and there's shuttles that will bring you in.
58:01
Always if there is a shuttle, utilize the shuttle because parking is very competitive and it is very
58:07
it's tough to get done. It's also tough sometimes whenever the parade is finished and then leaving.
58:14
Yes, you don't want to just be in standill. Um, and there also still are a lot of residents and shops and things that need
58:20
that parking as well. So, it they're they're aware that a lot of people are going to be coming. Um, but that's the
58:27
reason why they offer shuttle services and I think one of those services is from the USB campus.
58:33
So, it's Yes, it's Yes. It's just um down Pope Avenue and there's a lot of
58:39
parking um and especially the time of day that parking lot is empty. Yeah. So, it's um it's a great way to
58:46
have your car and the worst case is that even if you don't take the shuttle, it's
58:52
not that far of a walk. It's not. I mean, Hilltown's what 14 miles. So, worst case scenario, it's 14 miles
58:59
away. Yeah. Yeah. Not too bad. Um participation obviously is there some highlights from this year.
59:06
Are there any bands that are playing afterwards or food trucks? usually with this. I think
59:11
I think last year if I recall the in Celebration Park they did have some food
59:16
trucks and music. It was sort of a as we were waiting cuz not everybody does the
59:23
parade they sort of wait for the parade. So because a lot of people just want to be spectators. They want to sit there and
59:28
drink your drink and watch the And that's the thing again. It's another community right? You bring your lawn chairs at Celebration Park. Kids are
59:34
running around with glow lights. Exactly. Yeah. And I mean, and it's grown because I mean, from what was the first one? Was
59:40
2020? Was that 2020? No, because they they 199
59:47
and 2020 they didn't do it for co. Yeah. Yeah. But it's that's what I was uh last year
59:54
I was like cuz we taken a couple years off too. And last year I was like we ran into everybody. I mean like the whole
1:00:00
community was down there. It was you can really tell the town has kind of amped it up. kind of was talking about just the that's the benefit of Crescendo
1:00:07
being more of like an organized art season than just it being one-off events.
1:00:12
Yeah. Is um but it's just it is truly just a community event and I think the
1:00:17
spectators um especially that time of year because I think it's the 23rd this year or 22nd I 22nd 22nd this year. Um, and it's it's a
1:00:26
little bit chillier, so you'll see people with their thermoses like drinking hot cider and cocoa, and it kind of is
1:00:32
really getting you into that hot. There's other things other than hotic. I'm sorry.
1:00:39
Especially our friends. I know that's not water in there. It's family friendly. It is.
1:00:45
I'm sorry. Just So, just to reiterate for those who aren't familiar, Alder Lane is off of
1:00:51
South Forest as you're heading towards Seep Pine. So, a lot of people don't even know that that's a beach access
1:00:57
point. It's public. That's the thing, too. Some people may um be intimidated. It's public access.
1:01:02
And if you want to see exactly where that's at, there's a map on your website and also on the London Parades website.
1:01:09
They have a map with updates. It's a must do. Must do event. Must do. Have to after you've done the
1:01:14
oysters. After you've done the I'm I'm blown away by this episode,
1:01:20
though. because like July I thought 4th of July but I'm like November it's a lot more um and I think
1:01:26
because it is the off season it's there's more time for planned events versus it being like you got the beach
1:01:33
you got fireworks you got the thing so it's um I think businesses and community members in the town are able to really
1:01:40
kind of orchestrate more official events this year but I I mean the lantern
1:01:45
parade I'm still thinking about it it's the reflection off of the water Oh. Oh, yes. That's really special. I think
1:01:52
that that kind of as you walk down the beach versus it just being on land, right? I
1:01:58
mean, cuz a lantern parade is going to be whimsical and magical anywhere you go. But I think having the reflection of
1:02:04
the the light off of the water and the beach, you're like, "Ah, it's something." It is. You're just walking on the sand,
1:02:10
hearing the waves. It's dark. It's just Yeah, it's so good. That's great point.
1:02:16
All right. So, a caramel apple festival at the Heritage uh farms November 29th.
1:02:24
That sounds delicious. So, uh I know caramel apple festival. It's like a time of year of just it's so
1:02:32
it's so sweet with no pun intended. But it's it's just a nice way for kids
1:02:42
to really it's I mean this time of year kids really get to experience like true
1:02:47
magic. It's like and it's um it's a season of it, right? Not just a couple days. And I think um I think especially this
1:02:55
time of year, not as many people if you don't live in sea pines go into sea pines for events. True. Yeah. So, I think like whether you're
1:03:01
grabbing um like a trail ride on with lot and stables or something, it's just it's such a nice time of year to be in
1:03:07
there and it's so quiet and it's really just the fact that yeah, like at the heritage farms they have
1:03:14
this event. It's just it's I I try to encourage more people to go into Sea Pines
1:03:20
during the offse because it's there's a lot of stuff going on within all of the different areas. It is right there. And
1:03:26
to your point, it's so quiet and relaxed in there, you know, versus summer. It's
1:03:32
such And because Seine's just so beautiful anyways. And so big, too. It's so huge. Yeah, I agree.
1:03:38
So, are there age ages? I mean, is this specifically for little kiddos that
1:03:43
I would say leans towards um younger kids? Um, but it is still an all age.
1:03:48
Like you even if you don't have children, you could attend, but it definitely is kind of more geared for
1:03:53
smaller kids. And being at Heritage Farms, can they see I'm assuming they can go pet the animals, the donkeys, aren't isn't there
1:04:00
a group of animals there down? Yeah. And um I'm not sure exactly the petting restrictions, but there are
1:04:06
little there there's different types of animals they can see. Okay. And then finally in this section, then
1:04:13
we'll get to our last section. Um the Thanksgiving wagon rides uh going through the forest reserve.
1:04:18
Remember I talked about wagon rides back in the summer. I think I mean wagon rides in my opinion are truly fall.
1:04:24
Yes. Much more of a fall event. So the wagon rides are from November 24th through the 29th.
1:04:29
So it's not um a the whole month long. Um but it's just um you go I think it's
1:04:36
between like 4:30 and 5. Okay. Um so it's not fully dark outside yet.
1:04:42
Like it's it's going to be definitely darker. It's not pitch black outside. Yeah, because we do the we do the time
1:04:49
savings of daylight savings. What? First week of November, right? Oh, I don't know. We'll have to fall
1:04:54
back. Yeah, we fall back. And so being at that because right now we're getting dark about 7:15. So yeah. So you're um you're
1:05:01
there kind of going into getting to dusk time. Yeah, that's great. Yeah, you can still see um nature that time of
1:05:08
uh night, which is nice because um when it gets too dark, visibility is restricted. Um but it's just a really I
1:05:15
mean it's a crisp activity as I like to call it. I'm like I love Is it bring your own hot chocolate? You think they'll have hot chocolate?
1:05:21
I don't know if they actually have hot chocolate. Got to have hot chocolate. Got to bring it I guess yourself. Yeah, bring a thermos and your blanket,
1:05:27
right? And some jackets just in case. say and always in here you really have
1:05:33
to kind of bring you need to bring a tank top and a jacket. You really don't know which weather. That is so true. Right now this morning
1:05:40
we got in Shal and I got in the car and it was 54 degrees and we were like and we're both in shorts and a shirt. We
1:05:45
were like oh my gosh was like it's freezing freezing ways cold and it was hard cuz we're going from
1:05:51
such warm weather into suddenly 50° so that feels so much colder than it
1:05:56
actually is. But I always whether you're visiting here, you live here is I know they say everywhere to layer, but
1:06:03
here you need to have a very range of layers. Yeah. Because you're just not going to feel the temperature change. It it just
1:06:09
changes so abruptly because it's wild to think that many Thanksgivings all
1:06:15
throughout the holidays, I have spent it in a tank top. Tank top. Mhm. Because during the day, the sun is still
1:06:22
really warm. It's really warm. That's why I always say this time of year is a great time to take a vacation
1:06:28
because you could go to the beach during the day, sunbathe during the day, and then you get to sip hot chocolate on
1:06:34
a on a wagon at night. I know% crazy. Get all four seasons in the day.
1:06:40
All right, so our last section that we've got is of course we've got to do Thanksgiving and holiday kickoff. So
1:06:47
let's talk about the 5K turkey trot. Yes, the 5K turkey trot. Um I am not a a
1:06:55
runner. So I am not They always say that you marry into those families that you marry into um
1:07:01
Thanksgiving run kind of families. So the turkey trot is um it's I don't actually know how many years they've
1:07:07
done it on Hilton Head, but it's a reoccurring event every single year and they really
1:07:12
encourage you to dress up. So you'll see people dressed up with the turkey hats and the turkey. Oh my gosh, that's so much fun. People
1:07:19
will be dressed up with like the whole like flume like plume of the feathers the whole thing. So it's it's a run but
1:07:25
it's a really light-hearted because I see here the boat. Which is
1:07:30
it? The Skull Creek boat house or the boat house at Palmetto Bay. No, I think it's the the boat house
1:07:36
right here. Oh, Skull Creek. It's Skull Creek. Skull Creek. Yeah, I think it's the Skull Creek boat house. And they go through Javvis Creek.
1:07:43
I think they along So we see that every year cuz they come back by the high school. Correct. one year um that I I've never
1:07:49
ran in it, but um the one year that I saw it was um people even had inflatable costumes.
1:07:54
No way. You know, like like the full Yeah, like the dinosaurs like people and some people had inflatable turkey. I was
1:08:00
like, where did you get those? That's so much fun. I was like that is so great. But I um and I did see um I did see one person as
1:08:07
a dinosaur, but they were dressed like a pilgrim. So they had like the little buckle on the dinosaur. I was like,
1:08:13
"This is so creative and so fun." So it really is not it's not a very serious event.
1:08:20
Yes. So there's also a charity component to this race, right? Yes. And um this one benefits the deep
1:08:26
well project which we mentioned before is um I think my favorite Hilton Head charity is um because it's it started
1:08:32
off with providing wells to people who didn't have well access and it's really become such a valuable resource for so many
1:08:39
people in the area. Yeah. and the amount of food that they gather this time of
1:08:45
year because it's really hard. I mean, a lot of families are experiencing shifts and changes in this new normal that
1:08:50
we're all experiencing, but that not being able to have a full Thanksgiving
1:08:56
or a full holiday dinner is very a lot of pressure on a lot of families. So, they're able to provide full dinners for
1:09:04
families, which is incredible. That's amazing. You're you're running for a cause on
1:09:10
this side. So what do the do what do the participants contribute? You can contribute um cash donations are
1:09:17
always appropriate but you um can bring canned goods as well. And um this time of year you do see a shift of kind of
1:09:23
canned goods leaning holiday because there is a big demand for pumpkin puree,
1:09:28
cranberry sauce, green beans like you're going to find. But it can be any canned good. It does not have to be
1:09:35
just Thanksgiving themed. And I think that's important because um sometimes canned meats are that's valuable for the
1:09:42
entire year for a lot of families. So I think really and sometimes I mean we look in our shelves sometimes we all
1:09:48
have more canned soups than we know what to do with. I literally just packed up snacks that the kids will no longer eat. For some
1:09:55
reason they want this and then they quit eating it and it sits on my shelf. So I packed it up and took it to the pantry.
1:10:01
I think everyone gets kind of like fixation meals. Yeah. Like for a while I was like, "Oh, it was butternut like
1:10:06
squash soup or nothing else and now I can't even look at it." I'm like, "Why did I buy so much of this?"
1:10:14
You go to like a store and buy it in bulk and you're like, "What did I do?" I should be donating it to Deep Well.
1:10:19
That's what I should be. That's exactly right. That's exactly right. So, um, back to the race. So, strollers are
1:10:26
welcome with with kids. So, strollers, it is family friendly, but please, please, please do not bring pets.
1:10:31
No pets. Okay. pets. Um I believe service animals are always um allowed. Um but always double check
1:10:38
um and it is service animal, not emotional support animal. Okay. Um as a dog mom, uh that it's always
1:10:45
hard for me to leave my fur baby at home. But it's um it's not a pet friendly
1:10:51
event. So even though it is outdoors, don't bring pets and don't run with pets. Yeah. And they do ask if you are
1:10:57
bringing strollers that the strollers stay at the back of the pack. So, let the runners go forward.
1:11:02
It can be a It can be a safety hazard. Yeah, exactly. Um, and then I thought
1:11:07
something that was really neat that the families can walk together. So, I thought that would be a nice family
1:11:13
experience. You want a family walk? Talk to your boys. I'll do it. You would? I would. I would run. I bet you she was
1:11:19
a runner. I would run married into runner family. I'm not like a constant runner, but it's
1:11:24
very much a stress stress reliever for me. I I can just run. See, for me, I'm a
1:11:29
walker. Like, I can walk for days. Just never been a runner. But
1:11:36
there is the fact that you can walk it. That's even actually a good point because it's not just and especially how
1:11:41
light-hearted it is. People are in turkey outfits. I think it would be almost fun to get everyone dressed up and just go walk it before we start
1:11:47
cooking and just to get in the mood and be in the community. I think also just that metabolism. Exactly. Exactly.
1:11:54
Before you're about to take a big nap and watch football. Yeah. lowering your blood sugar by getting it moving. Yeah.
1:12:00
And also like your stress level down. Yeah. Because I know there's games on on Thursdays and stuff. So,
1:12:05
Well, we're actually playing Turkey Bowl this year. Oh, yeah. So, that's out and we don't run. We go play Turkey Bowl football.
1:12:11
So, we're having a big Turkey Bowl Hilton Head Plantation. So, a bunch of kiddos are getting together.
1:12:17
That is not that is not an official event. Show up. We don't have any real. I do have one
1:12:24
more thing to ask and then we'll move on to our last two things. Thank you for hanging there with us. We know it's been
1:12:30
long, but I hope you're enjoying this info. It's such good. This is some good stuff here. It is. Um, it's getting me fired up. I'm
1:12:36
not even joking. Um, best postra breakfast spot. So, I
1:12:41
would choose depending on the There's different locations depending on where you end,
1:12:48
but I think breakfast I would go with Skillets. Thanksgiving that will be open on Thanksgiving.
1:12:53
Um Oh, I don't That's a good point. I didn't even think about that. That's my bad. That's a good point.
1:12:58
I don't think it's maybe We actually have an article Maybe your own kitchen. We actually have an article in the
1:13:03
magazine about um places open for Thanksgiving Day and that offer Thanksgiving dinner. You'd actually be
1:13:09
surprised. There is a lot open on Thanksgiving. Well, being a tourist town, right? Well, we used to do that. We used to
1:13:16
with the boys sometimes we'd go out of town and we go go out to eat for Thanksgiving and I think because so many
1:13:21
people do spend their holiday week um the whole Thanksgiving week with us on Hilton Hunt
1:13:27
um that a lot of places do stay open um so even if it's not a post-race breakfast you do have options to go out
1:13:33
to eat on Thanksgiving for lunch or dinner and that would be on the website
1:13:40
and we'll keep that updated as we because some places have not released the full information, I guess. Um, cuz
1:13:46
sometimes they just don't know if they're going to have the staff or the means to to stay open on Thanksgiving,
1:13:51
but our website will have the most recent up-to-date information. That's awesome. That's a great point. So, make sure you
1:13:56
keep checking out the website. All right. Harbor Town always has a
1:14:02
Thanksgiving concert. Yes, Greg Russell. Um, the classic Harbortown staple piece. Um, so he has a
1:14:09
a fall performance um at the Liberty Oak um over there in Harbortown. Yeah. And it's just nice because especially even
1:14:15
if you've seen Greg Russell play in the summer, it's I mean I'm just so biased. I love the fall.
1:14:20
It's so much nicer. Um and it's and again it's just another reason to go
1:14:25
into Sea Pines during this time of year. So if you're not staying there, just going in there.
1:14:31
Yeah. Just getting in there and having like you almost feel like you're in vacation, too. you know, especially if you're on
1:14:37
north end or mid end mid island and then you go south into we're just coming from Bluffton as well. Like it really feels like you're on
1:14:43
vacation and it's um it's really nice to see the marina kind of sparkle at night.
1:14:49
Is it it's lit up or um there there's some holiday like lights and stuff that you'll see, but
1:14:54
some of the boats um that are um mored, is that the word? Yes. In the in
1:15:00
the harbor, they um a lot of the boats will have lights on them as well. decorating.
1:15:06
Plus, you get to see a living legend. I mean, it's Greg. I mean, the guy has a
1:15:11
Netflix show or a movie about documentary about him, you know. So, I think that alone is something awesome.
1:15:17
And then after his concert, there's a special event as well, isn't there? Yes. So, there's the Harbor Town um it's
1:15:22
sorry, the um the tree lighting. The tree lighting. The tree lighting, which is um after the concert. So that is the real kickoff for
1:15:29
sea plants holidays. Like that is um there's lighting of the tree events throughout the island um at the end of
1:15:35
November. Okay. Um some of them are in the first couple of days of December. So we could talk about that next time, but really since
1:15:41
when this airs um really keep your eyes peeled for tree lightings, whether you're at the art center, at the in
1:15:49
Harbortown, um in Shelter Cove, cuz tree lightings are just seeing it go on for the first
1:15:54
time. It's really There's one more outside of a tree lighting is the fire station. Fire. What number is that? You know the fire
1:16:00
station? The one across from Port Royal. Yes. Yes. Fire station. No idea. We'll put that in December's December's episode.
1:16:07
We'll talk about my entire life. They've been decorating that station and it grows and how much it's grown in
1:16:12
my lifetime cuz I think when I was younger it was just like a few strings. Yes. And they started doing the trees and it started growing growing growing.
1:16:19
But I'm like if for people who don't know what we're talking about, it is it is worth to go see. It is. So we drive through it every
1:16:25
year. They count the number of cars driving through and it's in the thousands. There's so many people that
1:16:31
that go through. All the other stations gave up. I heard because we have a firefighter that lives across the street from us. He's like all
1:16:36
the other stations sort of gave up. Yeah, they gave up. Like why? Like this is
1:16:42
So just to reiterate, um the Greg Russell Thanksgiving concert and tree lighting in Harbortown is November the
1:16:48
28th. Yes. And going through January the 1st. the lighting wood. The lighting wood
1:16:56
kickoff concert. That's the Harbortown lights that runs through January 1st. And then the last thing, most important
1:17:02
for all those kiddos out there, somebody's coming to town. Ching
1:17:08
to Santa Claus comes to town on November the 28th in Shelter Cove.
1:17:13
Okay. And um it's like a little parade that he comes in with, but it really is
1:17:19
just I mean it's what you expect. It's a It's a magical experience.
1:17:24
I love Shelter Cove at that time. It is so lit up. Both the community park and the marina, everything around that
1:17:30
area is it's so nice that time of year. And seeing all of the the festive lights and like I said, like even all of the M
1:17:37
boats, they're all decorated and and kind of feeling festive. It's It's awesome.
1:17:42
Just remind me something. Are they doing the boat light parade this year? Oh, do you do you remember that?
1:17:47
Yeah, they did do that. I know. Um I'm sorry. You just reminded me of that
1:17:52
cuz they had that last year down creek for December. I bet you those dates will come out.
1:17:58
The uh the owners of Comedy Magic, they are involved with that. I'll have to ask them because I know that they since they
1:18:04
live that way. Um they're part of the parade. Okay. Yeah, that will be something good to highlight next. Next December. Yeah.
1:18:10
Next year. Um so just going back to Santa. So there'll be photos and
1:18:16
there's going to be photos and there's um just activities. Train rides. Yeah. And shopping. And how long should
1:18:23
families plan to kind of be there, do you think? Um, I would say kind of expect to be
1:18:28
there for at least 2 hours. Yeah. Um, waiting in lines for you. Yeah. And just be patient. I mean,
1:18:34
there's there's only one guy to go around. So, yeah. Yeah. We can't show two Santaas cuz that
1:18:39
could cause some confusion. I miss those days. Asha, would you ever do a Santa thing again?
1:18:45
Well, you sit on Santa's lap. Sorry. All right. So that is all our events
1:18:51
that we have. I mean there's so many that's it, huh? That is a lot. There's like nothing to do in the low
1:18:57
country. It's boring here. When I hear anyone say like there's nothing to do this time of
1:19:03
year. Come on. Pick up an Island Events magazine and listen to real talk. But I was saying like anything kind of
1:19:09
like the unexpected like go do a yoga class on a boat. On a boat. So different. I mean, literally my mind I have a mind melt
1:19:15
right now as I go through this just like like oh my gosh, there is so much to do.
1:19:21
Like if you're bored, it's because you're choosing to be. And I think it's there's it's a mix from
1:19:27
free activities to paid activities. So it's really that mix of you're it's in
1:19:35
all approachable levels cuz I mean going to every food festival not that's not
1:19:40
realistic for a lot of families to go to every single one as much as we wish everyone could go to every single one but some of the free events um that's
1:19:47
why I say if if there ever is a free event go support it because they're going to continue to put on these
1:19:53
performances and continue to do this if they see the community showing up the key part of it. So, the town's going to
1:19:59
invest if they see the support there. Yeah. All right. So, should we skip the lightning round or should we do the
1:20:05
lightning round? If we do the lightning round, it's got to be lightning, but go for it. Right. Okay. Nutcracker or Frozen? Nutcracker.
1:20:11
Lantern Parade or Bonfire? Lantern Parade.
1:20:16
Lantern Parade. Yeah. Concourse show. Um, show cars or vintage
1:20:22
plane? The planes. It's so cool. It's so unique. I would say planes or bonfire. No, that
1:20:28
wasn't the same question. Cloves or flames? He just wants to go to the fire. Sorry. Oysters. Do you want them roasted or
1:20:33
raw? Neither. Roasted. I knew that was roasted as well. Best drink, cocoa, cider, or
1:20:40
latte? Well, if it's hot, I'm a I'm an iced latte drinker, so I'm going to go with
1:20:45
cider. Cider. Okay. For hot, man. I would like cocoa. Sorry.
1:20:51
Okay. Thank you. One rainy day backup plan. Um, go to the galleries and
1:20:56
museums. Love it. Love it. Snuggle with you watching a movie. Oh, even better.
