0:00 you show up we have it ready for you when you return you say thank you very much well and that is a good point 0:05 there's a lot more Inland Lake um clubs popping up they so yeah like Lake Murray 0:11 at first had one location now they have three yeah they do I saw that same thing with like Lake Norman like two lanir has 0:20 like they're I remember I was uh tubing with these guys and I didn't realize the 0:26 Rope had frayed and so I'm zipping around the thing snapped the tubing the 0:32 Rope the Rope snapped uh the line snapped and I'm by the time I turned 0:37 around and they were so far down the river I was like unbelievable just floating just well that's why you want 0:43 to bring extra kids have tester kids and then your 0:48 kids Whoever has misbehaved the most recently kids 0:55 kids we got we got to make a list of T kids so what are some common mist mes 1:00 that Boos make um buying a boat instead of joining a club is probably probably the biggest 1:06 mistake they make but short of being a hardcore fisherman or wanting to go overnight or the overnight thing which 1:12 again night boating is night boating um there is no reason mhm to not be a 1:18 member of a club whether it's ours or another one versus owning a boat the expense is a third or a fifth yeah of 1:26 what it cost to own your own boat and no worries uh every boater that owns a boat when he turns that key he's hoping it 1:32 starts uh let's talk about the the ratio membership yeah we didn't talk about and 1:37 the age and condition of Welcome to Real Talk Hilton Head with David and Dale to have two incredible guests from the Carefree boat club join us today first we're 2:47 going to have a season boat captain Tony Ferrar he runs the marina sharing insights into the local waterways the 2:54 wildlife and all the best boating experiences from his 45 years in the area and and then the club director Don 3:01 Del prior he'll break down how the Carefree boat club gives members unlimited access to the fleet of boats 3:08 without the headaches of Maintenance and storage or other high ownership costs so if you've ever dreamed of cruising 3:15 through the May River Skull Creek or the cology sound spotting those beautiful dolphins or docking at waterfront 3:21 restaurants but don't want the hassle of owning a boat this episode's for you join us now welcome to the show guys 3:29 thanks for having to be here thanks for coming back I'm coming back inside joke no we're good 3:36 we'll explain it all later there was a to that one so we just did the intro and 3:42 I just want to Dive Right In talk to me what is boating without owning that 3:48 would be carefree boat club you are not the owner of the boat you have no responsibility for registration taxes 3:55 Insurance all of the annoying things cleaning the bottom all of that you just get to come out and enjoy the water call 4:03 and make a reservation I like no responsibilities no responsib exactly what it 4:09 is respons free that's outstanding so so obviously 4:16 that's the gist of it but explain how it works and to somebody out there who's never because I actually have a client 4:23 coming in town they just bought a bat and he's so excited and he's like but I need somewhere to put it I need to have 4:29 a place to store it where can I dock it and I said well you should have called me well you should have called us so 4:35 let's break it down for them the whole process how does it work how do you get in what if I've never booted before but 4:42 I want to do it how do you help me all that we take care of everything all the training is done by us we do a massive 4:48 trip uh which you're allowed to bring your you know spouses children dogs grandparents whoever you want uh it's 4:54 about a 25m loop to get you started and boating around here show you where all the bars all the sand bars are how to 5:01 use the ocean on both sides Savannah Buford defy Street well here those are playgrounds 5:08 they're not they're not scary they're fun thanks for clarifying yeah yeah not 5:13 the alcoholic we don't have floating bars although that's not a bad idea 5:19 sometimes the boats are are you thinking about making a move 5:24 to the Low Country whether you're searching for the perfect home or you're exploring vibrant communities on the 5:30 coast or dreaming of a new lifestyle we're here to help contact the David Dale team today and let's make your 5:36 dream a reality so um so explain the mechanism of it though as far as the 5:42 cost structure you know what are they what are they in for sure well we have an any day program where people can take 5:49 votes any day of the week and then we have a weekday only program where you're um more limited to the weekday only so 5:56 the weekday that's less expensive obviously because most people are busy on the water on the weekends so you pay 6:03 an Initiation fee then you pay a monthly fee and then the only thing that you 6:08 have to worry about is paying for gas once you are on the water so your 6:14 expense is initially a little higher and then your monthly fee stays the same 6:19 it's consistent and um we ask for a two-year commitment um and then from 6:25 that point forward it goes month to month so it's easy very easy to to be a boat club member yeah and in full 6:31 disclosure anybody who's listening or watching and for those who are listening just an FYI we are filming this as well 6:38 and you can find this episode on YouTube there will be overlays and we'll show shots of the marine and stuff like that 6:44 so just uhi so um Tony just to bring It full circle Dawn's explained to us how we 6:51 initially get in so you take when they sign up they come in and you take them 6:56 on a tour we set up around their their schedule whenever possible to do their trainings 7:02 whether it's morning afternoon or even later than that okay uh the first training is about two hours and it deals 7:08 with currents and docking and uh things like that and the second one's really basically just a four or five hour boat 7:13 ride showing them all the places they can go to start you know their adventure and boating around the Low Country um 7:20 and we have no uh limitations on where you can go or what you can do um going 7:26 to Savannah or the out Islands Buford and the out Islands over there incredibly normal uh and people just you 7:32 know they start thinking this is the only place I'm going to go and they go further and further and further uh the 7:37 only thing you're limited to is is light uh we set the boats out at Sunrise and 7:43 we bring them back at sunset uh at Sunrise and watch the the sun come up 7:49 stay all day oh wow stay all day on the boat I wanted to add in on that too it doesn't matter how experienced you are 7:55 as a boat driver um Tony will teach you from people who've never done anything 8:01 in a boat um to people who've owned their own boats and for them the 8:07 training is much quicker typically short in the area yeah they have experience but um we've had several 8:14 like we're couples and the the husband is um experienced and right away trained 8:21 and the wife wants to learn she may take a few extra but we don't have a limit on that we're not charging you for that um 8:26 training so it's um a good example is her husband and her joined yeah she used 8:32 the boat 10 times more yeah than than he did um and that's really normal the lady 8:37 say I'll never drive alone before you know they're out with their posy watching the doll yes we do we have a 8:42 friend that does that all the time and they're more comfortable and actually better than their husbands are at boting 8:48 I need to get there help me Tony you do need to get there I have to think about it too like if I'm the only one on the 8:54 boat US what happens if something happens to me right that's that's another reason we do it right even if 9:00 the ladies said we're never going to drive I still still have them drive all you have to do is uh be able to get to a 9:06 dock if there is emergency and dial 911 but let's see it this straight we have 9:11 ladies that join that are just single ladies too yes that also you know there 9:16 there's no gender there's a word I would like to say for them but I can't it on camera yeah they're my heroes it's all 9:24 good it's all good yeah yeah well I think that training if I can touch on that too is very important is the 9:29 docking side because I never realized the current and how fast they are and 9:35 you pull up and if you miss it all of a sudden your back end's like floating away we spend a bit of time on that a 9:41 good bit of time on that but also if you're not comfortable after the first two trainings we'll never stop training 9:48 you all you have to do is ask and again the time the boat the gas everything's on us the boats are very expensive we 9:55 want you to feel comfortable we want you and the boat to come back looking the way you did 10:00 blown so it's worth our while to make sure that you're comfortable driving the boat well talking about boats you have 10:07 several different types right not just one type of boat do you want to talk a little bit about that we have anything 10:14 you can use for the Low Country okay uh the only thing we don't have would be far offshore uh fishing but we do have 10:21 23 Parkers with 250s and people take them out 35 miles beyond that you're kind of you're way out in the ocean uh 10:28 so with one motor if something does go wrong you know you're out there uh anywhere Inland one motor is fine your 10:34 phone works fine yeah uh you can always call and we'll come take care of it well and I sorry that's one thing I love 10:40 about you guys if we're on the water and we have an issue you're literally on the other end and somebody's out there to 10:46 help out abut that and yeah and to add to Tony we we have those center consoles 10:52 those Parkers but we also have bow Riders we have new hurricane deck boats what are those for people on when 11:00 you're um stepping onto the boat it's like a pontoon everything's flat it's 11:05 more social seating but the actual Underside is not on pontoons oh okay so 11:11 it's a boat on the bottom and a pontoon on top yeah they have 21 drink holders give you an idea what the boat's made 11:18 for we were talking about yeah yeah yeah so how does the handle way different 11:24 thanon I have just been breaking them in they are literally brand sping new oh my gosh handle so much better the pontoons 11:31 but on top as a customer it is you know 15 passenger Ultra Luxury feeling boat but 11:39 on the bottom it handles like a boat not like a pontoon boat yeah but we do have 11:44 some pontoons and we do have a couple bow Riders as well so we've got a selection you don't that's one of the 11:49 beauty beautiful things about it is you know if someone's a fisherman they can 11:55 get the center console and then when someone else wants to come visit or whatever they can take out the hurricane 12:00 deck boat or the Pontoon or what you don't have to commit so that's what yeah 12:06 yeah that to me is what sums it up because you get these folks they put all this money into a boat and then it's not 12:12 they can't that's it that's all you have whereas here it's like well today I'm going to take this I'm going to take the kids out water do I want to speed do we 12:21 want to do water tubing or things like that well your boat's always minutes away for people that uh trailer their 12:27 boats I mean it's a science they quit using their boat they're not going to use it after X 12:33 amount of times because it's a pain in the neck yeah um and then dockage just at our Marina pometto Bay Marina is 12:41 58750 per month for all the boat sizes we have wow so I mean right there is you know that's not even my my monthly 12:47 membership your monthly is going to be less than what you would pay to dock the 12:55 same boat yeah okay yeah so so on the boats too when you're talking about range cuz we only just started kind of 13:01 going out like how far realistically can you go on a tank of gas and and are we to F it up you would be allowed to fill 13:08 it up the likelihood unless you were to take one of the smaller pontoons to Savannah and then towards Buford or 13:14 whatever you never ever have to worry about filling up The Parkers the center consoles hold between 70 and 110 gallons 13:20 oh you could be out all day flying the entire time never stopping you still wouldn't come close to burning it really 13:27 okay I didn't know they gas is never ever an issue okay oh that's good to know and you can't take the boats 13:33 overnight right if you wanted to go to a different we don't allow that that's the one thing we don't allow um out on the 13:39 water at night um is such a different world you think you're going left you're 13:44 really going right you think it's water in front of you and it's land wow you're depending on a GPS which all the boats 13:51 are equipped with every possible safety thing um but those are going to go bad or blind you because of the light coming 13:57 off them um I've been at night a million times I'm still horribly uncomfortable 14:02 at night crab traps pylons docks uh trees floating in the water you can't 14:08 see anything you're totally blinded at night I I personally have never have no desire to do it you know wouldn't want 14:14 to do it it's not fun no I agree so so that's just not an option for everybody's good we really only have 14:21 three rules one over Skipper can't be out at night and can't be out in horrible weather yeah other than that 14:27 the boats are available all the time yeah yeah you guys have do a really good job on the weather you've kept us off 14:33 yeah many times we'll call if there's a popup storm or something we'll call and say hey where are you get somewhere safe 14:39 or something like that so yeah let's dive deeper into the safety of the Boating especially for people that are 14:45 visiting and firsttime boat users so you have your GPS's you have your depth 14:51 finders what are the features do you have on the boat they all have radios um most people are more comfortable with 14:57 their phone than a radio yeah uh but but they are on there um then all the safety stuff you're supposed to have throwable 15:02 device flares the registrations the life jackets are all on the boats all the time we make sure that if you get pulled 15:09 over yeah You' got what you're supposed to have and you do get pulled over to 15:15 your point on this sober driver right sober Captain I should say right but 15:21 other people are allowed to drink on the boat is that correct you can do anything you want to but one sober Skipper okay 15:27 that's it that's the because yeah we have seen boats being pulled over and they I was pulled over 15:33 one time with my grandchildren and I was like what did I do and they stopped me 15:39 because my grandchildren were wearing their life jackets and they gave the the kids a t-shirt that said I got caught 15:47 wearing my life jacket a so it was actually the flip it was a good thing it was a good thing what did I do yeah yeah 15:55 was it DNR or the uh only DNR does that I was going to say I think it was yeah 16:00 Coast Guard and Sheriff's Patrol are the other two bodies on the water and they they don't have as good a sense of 16:07 humor and then your your Center councils they have live bait Wells they have 16:12 everything for fishing and nowadays they've turned Center cules which used to be considered fishing boats into also 16:18 family boats they're trying to they're trying to you know grab both sides so a husband wants a fishing boat his wife 16:24 wants to go out and have fun on a boat uh they kind of married the two so the seatings nice and there's cup holders 16:31 you know they they' tried to make them a little bit nicer than the old hardcore fiberglass I'm assuming no they knocked 16:37 you down to like nine so what are you going to do double fist yeah double fist just get 16:45 figure get your back on I love those fishing boats though because they they 16:50 handle so well I mean I absolutely yeah and they can go to really small like 16:56 like a foot of water right we say Draw 2 and 1/2 ft okay is what we 17:02 say so whether it's a pontoon a deckboat a bow Rider center console if you're in 2et of Water 2 and 1 half ft of water 17:09 you're good okay when you start nudging shorter than that and and running a ground here it's uh it's what you're 17:14 supposed to do you're it's going to happen at some I've hit every single Sandbar it's going to happen and that's 17:20 we deal with it and it's not that big a deal people are so scared of it um Tony teaches you how to get back out 17:29 once with my engineer over that's my son for those listening and watching um and he was driving you 17:36 know um and just we were heading over towards defos and we just cut a little 17:42 tight there and boom we hit it but fortunately I had somebody on to help me kind of nudge it off but what do you do 17:47 you just typically you just trim the motor up to the count of three that'll move it up six or8 inches and go 17:54 straight backwards move the weights to the back of the boat and go straight backwards Wherever You Came From There was water 17:59 most people want to through plow through it and you have no clue what's in front of you but you know what's behind you so 18:04 if you just go backwards you're loose again and then don't go that way yeah there you go and believe it or not you'll remember it for the rest of your life hey over there is 18:12 shallow so for the less out there if I'm I got the red and I got the green what 18:18 are we talking Flags in the water and this is always Channel markers markers thank you what do they mean those are 18:25 suggestions put up by uh cor of Engineers or DNR to Mark a channel okay 18:30 um and they're ridiculously easy to understand if you don't overthink it if the numbers are getting bigger so if 18:36 it's going 1 2 3 four is you you're going up River so you're going home we always live up River okay on the inter 18:43 Coastal here going south righted on your right going south we all live in the south so South is home so if you're 18:49 going to Savannah righted on right you're going to Buford righted on left got and that is it with markers um and 18:55 again those are just uh suggestions of where a channel is for the big yters um 19:03 yeah we don't you can you can play outside the markers all day long there's no rules you can go anywhere uh 19:08 Sheriff's Patrol Coast Guard DNR they don't care if you're a mile up in the marsh that's what we do in the Low Country yeah well and that's I think you 19:14 just hit it on the head cuz that's how we tie this all in right that's what you do if you're going to move to the low country and live here part 19:22 of you're missing oute if you live on an island like you're on an island for cry 19:27 out loud I remember the first time time we rented a boat we W with the boat club yet and we rented one with my family and 19:34 once we came down um P Bay wasek Creek thank you came out talking I'm just 19:41 going to make don't mind me um I just couldn't 19:46 believe the island from the water I mean you saw the the T um I have lost all my 19:52 words a Harbor Harbor Harbor Town I saw the Harbor Town lighthouse I'm like oh 19:59 my gosh that looks so different from the water and the golf courses and the houses it's just you have to experience 20:05 well everything's Closer by water too by land you to get to Savannah or Buford or Ty island or wherever you're going and 20:11 you have to go around all this water but by water zip you're there often we've thought about that want go to savann 20:17 let's just take the boat versus driving well since you guys moved the marina to 20:23 Skull Creek we added addor not had two locations thank you for correct have two 20:29 location P Bay and Skull Creek but um we did one night went out of there and 20:35 because we live in Hilton that Plantation so we just jumped on and we were in Buford for dinner uh quick and came right back and it would it would 20:42 have taken just as much time to get there as it took for us to get there and get back just to drive over to where we 20:48 went and grab some pizza plus it's a pretty nice way to get there with the Dolphins and the manes and all that you 20:54 know the time goes very quickly versus uh sitting in the car well that's part of the lifestyle right that's why it's 21:01 so awesome living here because it's different well then we've got the new pickle ball boots no no we don't have 21:08 those breaking breaking you a real 21:14 talk top two things to do the little country so something else that we do 21:19 with your boats a lot and let's talk to it um is skiing and water skiing and um 21:25 tubing tubing tubing is huge y so what boats can folks use those every single 21:31 one of the bar boats can handle even the pontoons even the pontoons they all have hooks for a harness and you can pull 21:37 whatever you want to behind them um and it's a good way to torture your children it is tubing is tubing is awesome to 21:44 that with love yeah I know my children first thing they would do when they get on a tube and say you can't get me off 21:49 so the challenge was there yes no we don't provide the apparatus but you are 21:55 welcome to bring your own so you can bring your own tubes your own equipment do you know they do in some places yeah 22:00 they do and they they yeah that's part of they also charge more in some places 22:06 they I'm just well there's a big Insurance divide if you are skiing or tubing or something like that so oh I 22:13 got it and a lot of tubing and skiing in Lake areas is very different than the 22:19 yeah and that's what we've always experienced it would be Lake areas where they they they say hey what do you want 22:25 on it and they just load up with everything actually let's talk about that's a reciprocal agreement which to 22:33 me outside of everything else right it's worth it 100% you throw in the reciprocal and now when you're planning 22:40 your vacations and you're going here let's talk about what is reciprocal first a Carefree boat club is located 22:46 all over the US and then we have some locations in the Caribbean and the uh Virgin Islands and you actually maybe 22:53 Philippines in Hawaii I was going to say in in Panama I think now but so they're 22:59 being added and you as a Carefree boat club member who has completed all your safety requirements and had five home 23:05 usages you may have three usages per year per location so if you wanted to 23:13 just go around to various Carefree boat clubs and use boats you can and you 23:18 there's no extra charge when you show up to do that you make a reservation at those locations just like you would your 23:24 home location and then you get the benefit of being able to vote lots of places all over the world really um 23:31 without having to pay extra money you just pay for your gas and talk about how you how you do reserve the boat um you 23:38 can do that well reciprocal reservations you would have to do online through your every member has an online um access you 23:46 know username and password um and you typically would make reservations online 23:51 however at your home Club at petow Bay or Skull Creek you can call and and do a 23:57 walkup reserv ation and just say hey is there anything available today I did had not planned to come out on the water but 24:03 it's beautiful and here we go and then uh what 99% of the time we had three 24:09 today people just the day was too nice they had to get on the water they just walked down and got on a boat you've 24:14 done that for us several times yeah that's especially when with the weather when it's turning like this and it's so 24:20 gorgeous it's like what's the better thing to do than go boting today I mean 24:25 if you live in Hilton Head or bluon it is a quick little drive over so I mean 24:30 it it may be you know 3:30 in the afternoon you go hey you know what I'm knocking off work let's go and gra work 24:37 here yeah every now and every now and then I just don't tell anybody some 24:45 people yeah but yeah I mean it's not like you have a 45 minute ride to go and 24:50 and get us so you know within 20 minutes you can call have a boat ready get over there and be on the water and you go 24:56 have your sundas and park the boat and somebody else cleans it and puts it puts it away that's just the beauty that's 25:04 the beauty of it are you thinking of selling your home with our exclusive Elevate package we combine over 50 years 25:11 of experience Cutting Edge data analytics our unique marketing strategies and our extensive network to 25:18 help your home Rise Above the Rest while maximizing your sales price and minimizing the time on the market so 25:25 contact the David Dale team today to learn more you show up we have it ready 25:31 for you when you return you say thank you very much and you take your toys with you yeah well and it's so funny cuz 25:38 um I want to keep on the reciprocal CU we have used that so many times especially like when with travel baseball or like Charlotte we just go 25:45 and I love getting on the map and saying oh and like hey where do you want to go well let's look where the boat club is 25:51 at never been there before and then just Target it with that and everybody has been every boat club I've ever been to 25:58 that we've used the reciprocal they've been so nice every they're just like you guys everybody's just welcoming and it's 26:04 super easy and that's the one thing I want to point out to people's like that's very easy that is an awesome 26:09 feature it's almost like you feel like um wait um do I have to pay anything you know like well I just think to myself 26:15 I'm like I couldn't imagine hitching up my boat trailing it up to somewhere else 26:21 trying to find a place too you know well and their their staff members will give you advice on where to go and yeah like 26:28 that too get there we had one up in Columbia they had a it was L Lake Murray 26:33 they had a double decker with a water slide off we had you talk about and we had the baseball team with us that's 26:40 awesome boys were jumping off the top down the slide well and that is a good 26:45 point there's a lot more Inland Lake um clubs popping up so yeah like Lake 26:51 Murray at first had one location now they have three yeah they do I saw that yeah same thing with like uh Lake Norman 26:58 like Norman has two laner has like there I my son lived in Austin Texas for a 27:04 while Lake Travis has them like a lot of Inland locations are they're booming 27:10 we're not yeah yeah that's good well speaking of lat let's talk a little bit about the difference between driving a 27:16 boat on the Ocean or the waterways and lakes there is a big difference really 27:22 the difference would be uh no current so 27:27 if you set a boat still in a lake the boat's only going to move because of a little breeze or something here if you 27:34 set a boat free it's it's going to be traveling at three or four knots uh one thing to always remember is if there 27:40 people in the water we say never anchor the boat and them will drift along at the same speed in a lake you just jump 27:45 off if you're anchored it doesn't matter you can swim against it here Phelps wouldn't be able to swim against our current yeah it can be pretty viol it's 27:52 extremely strong well the first time we took Shiloh he was a lot little on the boat we would tie a rope around him 27:59 because I mean obviously we're in the water with him but if he gets Swept Away a real thing you'll see it with a lot of 28:05 the rental companies yeah uh those rental people don't they're given a whole lot of information at one time so 28:11 they don't hear it all and they will anchor and their kids will jump in and panic ues absolutely you know it's it's 28:18 a scary scary thing I remember I was uh tubing with these guys and I didn't 28:23 realize the Rope had frayed and so I'm zipping around sna the tubing the Rope 28:30 the Rope snapped uh the line snapped and I'm by the time I turned around oh yeah 28:36 uh they were um what is that going to defal on the right that little creek creek creek so we were down you know how 28:42 it goes down around the we're around the bin and they were so far down the river 28:48 I was like unbelievable just floating just well that's why you want to bring extra 28:53 kids have test your kids and then your kids has misbehaved the most recently T kids 29:03 kids we got we got to make a list of T I got a couple of those half the baseball 29:09 team yeah no they're good um on a sidebar I 29:17 meant to ask this do we need a captain's license or anything like that it's a simple little thing you do online um 29:24 it's more of an endorsement that you've read the basic rules and you understand the basic rules of uh water Logistics 29:32 okay uh but no certainly not a captain's license that's a lot more detailed what 29:37 does that entail if somebody was interested a captain's license a lot of it has to do with 29:42 hours um so you would need x amount of hours over the course of 5 years 360 29:48 over five years I just got mine last year that's good one day equals 4 hours 29:54 equals a day so it's a tremendous amount of time on the water what you could get your C we've had a few people that have 30:00 gotten their Captain license through the boat club we just sign off on you yeah um and then there are four tests to get 30:05 your captain's license uh one of which is rules the road is very difficult yeah 30:11 it's fairly intense the other three are you know a little more common sensy but that one that one can be a little bit 30:16 rougher and then you have of course drug test uh you have a twick card transportation workers certific just 30:23 yeah first it's primarily for commercial like if I'm going to for commercial Sol for commercial 30:28 you wouldn't need one for personal use okay 90% of the stuff you learn getting your captain's license I'm a captain so 30:34 I'm not allowed to say this you will never use did not say 30:40 that some of that Global it's it's some river in Egypt has a particular buoy 30:46 that you're supposed to know and you're like I haven't seen that one sorry um so 30:51 that's no we TR Tony trains you for whatever you need to know we need okay 30:56 yeah that's fair I think so I think so and typically people feel pretty um 31:02 pretty comfortable after I train them it's it's I've done uh so many that I feel like I've made it so simple I can 31:09 even understand it that is always good when I can understand me and it's understandable 31:16 sorry that's funny so um you were you I saw you were you about okay I so I want 31:22 to talk about because you you spent a lot of time on the water so let's just talk about you know the Low Country 31:28 especially if you've never been here cuz it is such a unique place the Mars Just dive into whatever you love and share 31:35 and you know the place I do a lot of um I mean my family we use the boat to go to restaurants and stuff I'm on the 31:42 water all the time I mean literally every single day and have been for 45 years I never get tired of it I would 31:49 much rather right now be on the water than I enjoy doing 31:54 this but I would probably be on the water right now I was not in here yeah 31:59 um you never know what you're going to see out there yeah what what draws you I mean I love nature the Dolphins put on a 32:04 show Daily the manatees The Manor Rays all the seabirds The Eagles I was out a 32:11 couple days ago just putting hours on I have my mother-in-law and my kid on there it was freezing cold we were having a miserable time we ran into a 32:17 flock of white pelicans oh my God and we got up and scared him so we get a picture of them flying away don't do 32:22 that that's but uh but it was magnificent it made the whole trip worth it you know I 32:29 mean just to see something that nobody else got to see that day exactly I mean the first time we saw Dolphins oh my 32:35 gosh that that was amazing just to see them jump out the water and then they come and swim right next to you or if 32:41 you anchored they'll come right up to the boat we don't feed them no feed them 32:46 I know we do not feed them they amazing I have dumped our fishing uh the dead 32:52 we're out fishing perfectly legal is it cuz but what was funny was we were the whole bunch had died and we were out all 32:59 day long we were coming back and I was just dumping him out I wouldn't think next thing you know this dolphin he was jumping he followed us 33:06 like the whole way in it is illegal to feed him but it is not illegal to discard uh excess bait anywhere you want 33:13 so the days of holding the fish up and the dolphin would actually come up and sit on your boat you know uh that you 33:19 don't want to get caught doing but if you're literally throwing it overboard and there's a dolphin in your wake well kudos to you it's an awesome thing to 33:25 see I got to find that video would have to Overlay it on this if I find it because he literally chased us the whole 33:32 way and just like he had a smile on his face like there's one is he's literally looking with this one eye out of the 33:39 hanging out say you got anymore I got to admit like um I I do want to charge my friends and family when they come in 33:46 town every time I never realized how easy it was honestly it is an awesome show and I mean for most people you just 33:53 don't ever get tired of it yeah I agree with you what about the birds you said there's ton of birds out here well I 33:59 mean we have all the Predators um we're number one for apex predators with all the uh large sharks uh March through 34:07 October uh the sea turtles the Mana Rays the manatees the uh any apex predator 34:13 including a migration of 5 to 6,000 Dolphins from March to October we're the number one place uh calabi and Port 34:20 Royal sounds produce an insane amount of bait because of the massive movement of tide and current creates growth from 34:26 those microorgan break the shrimp is a shrimp and little 34:32 they will eat anything dolphin they have they actually go search for what they have an appetite for like you going into 34:38 Hardies or you know whatever they actually go look for it really um they're the only animal every other 34:44 every other animal eats what's in front of it but they're so good at what they do they don't ever have to try hard to 34:53 your question I'm not sure Tony heard it birds birds he said all those apex 34:58 predators come in too we have ospry we have Eagles we have we're getting a lot 35:03 more bald eagles now too you know that actually yeah there there uh you know it 35:08 was one set over there on that L trust by Pinkney and then there was one over tusy now I see them if you keep your 35:15 eyes out you see them all over the place well they're seines that you oh yeah they are they are real they were coastal 35:21 birds well they've migrated South it was like 30 years ago was the first set in South Carolina was up uh 95 on NES 35:29 Island okay and in the last 30 years they've done really really well sou Carolina like everybody else done right 35:37 but there are tons of the egrets and I was just trying those bir they're 35:42 beautiful you're going to see well that's that's and are we in a migration path as well isn't pikney Island in this 35:49 area pretty big migration um it is just because of our massive balls of bait 35:56 okay um the more more water moves the faster the microorganisms grow CU that's how they eat and we have a huge tide and 36:03 that we have the biggest tide on the East Coast until you get to some place like Bangor or something um so our 8 so 36:10 describe what that means biggest tide to somebody who doesn't twice a day or four times a day twice a day we have a low 36:17 twice a day we have a high so in a 12-h hour period 16 ft of water needs to come and go wow and that's a lot of water 36:24 coming and going eight feet on each side of that tide yeah in layman's terms I was in AR Ruba once and a table was set 36:31 up for dinner and I said well aren't you guys worried about the tide and he looked at me like what and I said yeah 36:38 doesn't your tide go in and out he's like no no we don't we don't do that so where our tide at the beach will go how 36:47 how far hundreds of yards on a a day abely you see huge distances which was 36:52 why we can ride the bikes on the beach and do all those things that doesn't happen everywhere so for those of us 36:58 that don't West Coast of Florida is 3 in yeah Miami is a foot and a half so we 37:04 are eight times more than Miami we're 30 times more than the West Coast of Florida yeah and because of that the 37:10 microorganisms and it works right up the food chain okay so it works up so you can create more of that and that brings in all the animals and the birds 37:17 migrating okay right this science I love cuz we were walking out you know um a 37:24 hickory forest in Hilton Head Plantation we were out there the other day and I swear to you it felt like you could walk 37:29 over to um um b island you know cuz it was like she's like it was so it went so 37:36 far out I mean the oyster beds were showing too I mean we've had super super they call it a negative tide a negative 37:42 foot and a half tide the last three or four days really is that because of the Moon it does the moon controls all that 37:49 wow I know when we get the king Tides we have friends that live on the marsh that only when the king Tides happen or the 37:55 water comes in you know otherwise the kids are running on the sand on the flats so is it true we have a pretty 38:02 somebody said we have a very shallow shelf as well we are for about 30 miles we're 60 ft deep that's it where if you 38:09 go off of uh Florida you have 600 feet of water 3 miles off really so that much 38:17 huge huge difference one on the west coast drops tremendously really yeah it drops off the face of the Earth too the 38:23 West Coast of Florida is like us they stay shallow for many miles okay um but 38:29 so what's deep water here I'm sorry considered for a dock when you hear deep water oh well enough to get a boat in 38:35 and out so at dead low tide you'd want 2 and 1/2 ft water or he's talking like deep sea fishing deep what more than 60 38:42 feet like you were saying oh I mean black water starts at 300 feet so that's 38:47 considered deep okay but any kind of drop off here we have the hump 35 miles off that drops to 180 ft or something 38:55 what I think is fascinating is I our Beach water obviously is the greeny brown and it's because of that shelf 39:02 right yeah it's because of that tital shift that massive volume of water moving back and forth every 6 hours and 39:07 13 minutes it's going to be stirred up okay if you put it in a glass and let it 39:12 sit there for 2 minutes you'd have Crystal Clear water isn't that fascinating wow yeah cuz I've heard what is it that Betsy Ross I hear somebody 39:19 says if you go out there it's Crystal Crystal BL that's the beginning of and it's almost like a line you go out our 39:26 water is still dark dark dark dark dark and then all of a sudden you hit a little line it's like wow looks like Florida you know the crystal clear blue 39:32 water it just stops for some reason for scuba divers out there or people that are enthusiasts Betsy Ross is obviously 39:40 one of the big places around here can you explain what that is or all the other plac it's an old medical ship and 39:46 it goes from I think about 60 to 130 ft at an angle so it is for a more advanced um diver 60 ft is about Max for 39:55 beginner divers okay and then you still have current uh and most people are not used to diving in current so you do have 40:02 to pay attention to where you're headed yeah if you had the wrong way and how much air you have at 110 ft most novice 40:09 divers uh have a bottom time of two or 3 minutes oh wow and then they have to start working their way back up do you 40:14 dive I I had a dive business here for 35 years on the right 40:21 thing wow so where did you so did you dive around here I mean can you see any 40:27 I had a commercial dive business here oh wow boats or something or I did boats docks anything underwater oh wow man 40:36 Salvage yeah I know I I desperately want to but it scares me at the same time I'd 40:41 rather do the little snor and see the fish swim around me but I can't see fish in this water so I'm begging him to take 40:48 me to Betsy Ross but he doesn't the ocean he gets sick there something about tiger sharks it make me a little 40:55 nervous they're a lot friendlier than you think maybe maybe have you ever like 41:01 encountered have you ever been out where you I've uh I've been around sharks diving obviously a lot yeah we there's 41:08 four great sharks the great white s sand tiger tiger Hammerhead and bull and the only one that really is a nemesis to 41:16 humans would be the bull shark and they're in Shallow 5 foot water and they're the ones that they're just awful 41:22 God took a nap that day when he made them yeah wasn't thinking 41:28 but the rest of them are really really really not aggressive animals what ruined my whole religion cuz I was told 41:33 God never sleeps he rested his eyes for a moment just for a second that's the only shark 41:39 that would scare me out of the water if I see one of those I assume it's time to eat a sandwi them around here next to 41:45 never okay next to never um we are we do have a huge population yeah uh CU it's a 41:50 huge breeding area um but you know I mean there's again they're docile scared 41:55 animals are they they're like a buzzard you can't go up and you know they just eat dead stuff or weak stuff okay wow 42:02 okay so don't let them see try look agressive they'll feel the vibration I I watch those videos like uh 42:10 on reals and stuff on Facebook which I know you're not on like it's people that sit there and the shark will come up to 42:16 them and they'll they'll they'll like press it down or you know push it up and 42:22 it's fascinating that they you know it's like yeah most of them are not aggressive at all yeah um they get a in 42:29 the LI to as a kid yeah I mean I've heard like getting hit by a Coconut's much more likely then as we don't have 42:37 coconuts here I think we're in good shape I think we're good often do that we'll take the boat out into the big 42:43 channels and just stop and jump off and we have a good old time swimming yeah I 42:48 mean it's uh awesome I wouldn't jump into a big ball of bait yeah no I wouldn't do that can you tell me where 42:54 those so I can stay away I would yeah that's that's kind of ask how 43:02 do you see the ba how do you see the they're on top of the water have you seen BS of bait oh so 43:08 check this out right so I went fishing with um um Mike and um uh Rafael so I 43:14 called Mike up this buddy of mine and and I like hey Mike you you I'll pick up some bait you know because he was going 43:19 to take me out teach me how to fish he goes what do you mean pick up some bait I said well I was going to go pick up some bait he's like dude we're going to 43:26 get the ba so you know those those uh cast Nets so we're out there Mike's 43:31 looking around he's like go over there I was like okay I drive over there like 3 minutes later he drops the cast net in 43:38 and he pulls up like all the bait for the whole day oh my go it was man haen or mull one of the two and it was filled 43:45 the whole thing up and I was like okay I'm a bit of an idiot no more no more Bait fish on lakes yeah if you try to 43:52 buy live bait anywhere around here it does not exist yeah no body has live bait cuz everybody catches their own 43:59 bait yeah wow it's just easier faster that's a great tip for our viewers if you're coming to the area we 44:06 also well we we'll teach you Carefree all of us will teach you how to throw a 44:11 castet I would love to do that because it we stand on the dock and you cast a net we teach you how to do it wow and 44:17 you can see them like I can see them now because they it's like they flicker um from the Sun shiny yeah kind of shiny 44:24 well you were with us that day yeah when we did that I was like oh also the birds will tell you where they are when you 44:29 see a bunch of birds you're like Bait fish so yeah you don't even have to look in the water 44:35 see I'm going to keep Tony on speed dial Tony where's the bait today where do I 44:40 go follow the pro fisherman they'll tell you right where they are exactly you see them in the 44:46 calab a lot the pro fishmen don't tell you a whole lot of Secrets around you just have to follow them oh there you go 44:53 it's very hash about the fishing holes around here that's one thing that we have learn it is they 44:59 tell it's better that they don't tell you because if they do tell you and I'm one of them we would lie to 45:04 you that's just part of it catch a bunch of fish over there oh yeah well it's funny there's enough 45:13 fish I think it's what you're supposed to do yeah that's just part of the especially I I think if you're a 45:18 non-local like if you're not haven't been here 40 years you're still not in the club you know yeah and there are plenty of fish 45:25 out there to go around you just have to spend a little bit of time and you'll find your holes yeah you'll be like all 45:31 right this is my hole even though it's not you'll believe it is so what is your favorite fish to eat that you've you've 45:37 pulled out or to catch here or catch yeah catch and eat I mean the Big B Reds are a blast yeah uh the red fish trout 45:43 and Flounder in the winter a blast in the summer the king mackerel Spanish mackerel blues if you go just a wee bit 45:49 offshore you can get into the bigger fish yeah like the kobia and stuff like that kobia yeah kobia people come from 45:54 all over the world in May to come fish for IIA wow really is are we unique or something for that it's a breeding 46:01 ground form oh wow I didn't but you have to be offshore yeah well it's a new law you have to be three miles offshore to 46:07 keep the Cobia okay so if DNR were to pull you over they have to ask the fish where you were 46:16 caught they they P only two miles yeah that's I never understood 46:22 exactly how that worked and that's new as of like two years ago okay they get big how big is Kobe a I mean a 46:30 70 lb Kobe is pretty pretty big yeah I mean that's if you catch a 70 pounder 55 46:35 to 70 and you've got a big hobia well our neighbor he goes out and he's one of the one I love you bro but you never 46:41 tell you never tell us your he does bring us fish he does he always brings us fish so I'm okay with that got one of 46:46 those big old bags yeah the fish bags with ice and he fills that suck you know 46:52 lugs it out I'm like that's a that's some big fish he'll feed you for a year and he gets his own bait of course of 46:58 course of course he BR um in Richmond Hill on the water and like he knows he's 47:06 mom's a word you don't get nothing out of that guy for fishing you know so our waterways obviously have tons of fish 47:14 we've got the oysters we've got clams right uh we have very few clams we do have the small little nck clams okay um 47:21 but you do have to search for them yeah I saw a guy saw but it's not like other where you 47:27 would you would find them abundantly um to fill a bag here is an all day project 47:33 with you and the kids and stuff shrimp shrimp crab what kind of crabs do we 47:38 crab chop we have both blue and stone okay a blue crab is the crab of the Low Country and then in the last 30 years 47:44 we've had a huge migration of the stone crabs really uh which you can keep in South Carolina you can keep one 47:50 claw um Florida now they let you keep both claws so I don't know how the crabs eat but 47:57 okay hold on I'm confused and I know I meant to be Tony you never know if Tony's telling the truth or not either 48:04 really pass that really you can take both claws they're so abundant I guess that you can take both claws but you 48:10 don't put the crab back in the they grow back yeah oh you do now the blue crab you keep the whole thing meat what we do 48:17 is mostly inside the really good lump crab meat as they call it wait a minut hold second all right I know I was 48:22 trying to figure out whether love never know Tony so I I love living here and I 48:28 I I love but I know nothing so this you literally cut off a one you just pull it 48:35 off yank one right off oh for real for real and it grows back grows back 48:41 like a starf on the stone crabs not the blue crabs yeah yeah the stone crabs well all right what's what what is the 48:48 we'll have to look up pictures and put pictures of you count them they look like a stone they and their claws are 48:54 enormous compared to Blue Crabs and that's where me the BL ones those be 48:59 catch those be catch all the time W I'm Blown Away actually and there's um if you have a fishing license which if 49:04 you're going to fish around here you need a saltwater fishing license um you can have I think it's five or 10 crab chops I'm not positive on the number 49:11 that's changed um and you can just put them anywhere you could put them almost 49:17 anywhere and you write on the buoy your your license number so that DNR or whatever when they check them but you don't want them in the in the channels 49:23 you want them where they're in the channels all the time all the time it's 49:29 so bad but they're not supposed to be there okay so you what's the reason because of the traffic trff boats right 49:35 you want to leave the channel open for traffic yeah wow yeah I actually had one and somebody stole it yeah we had left 49:41 it overnight and they stole trap I'm sorry they stole your Crab Trap they 49:47 like this guy doesn't know what he's doing I was like literally like you I've never heard of that that's not okay I've 49:53 never heard of that yep right down here amazing was like your wait are you sure 49:59 it didn't just drift did you drop it at low tide then check it at high tide yeah no I left it like over night but 50:06 anything's possible still there that's a weird thing to steal yeah so listen I'm 50:12 learning okay that's why we're doing the show I'm trying to and it might have been the 50:18 crabs they might have walked off with us like we'll show this guy thought 50:25 trick with him yeah you put a piece of rebar on the 50:31 bottom of the Trap okay and that keeps it where it belongs and then of course the the line and then the buoy let you 50:37 know where it is but if you don't put that rebar on there it will drift away maybe it's somewhere I want to 50:43 personally apologize the person I secretly cursed out of my heart I let it go 50:49 though so we use chicken necks is that fish chicken necks anything anything if 50:56 you think it's gross most crabs will probably like it to yeah if you said 51:01 when you put it in there the crabs are probably going to enjoy it they all come yeah I got Adit the first time say that 51:07 was going through my head but I so proud yeah it's fun though I remember the first time I ever caught one we did it 51:13 with that that little the triangle in the line you know triangle and that looks so much fun but they're greedy 51:19 because they get on there and you're like I'm totally pulling you up and they're just like locked in what's weird 51:25 is a chicken neck is obviously part of a crabs diet they're so abundant the ocean 51:30 you drop one in there and they're like so yeah that was a joke for anyone 51:36 who doesn't know that's funny oh God all right all right all right so we we we digress no 51:43 that's fine um for people interested in fishing this is kind we have kind of talk about is there anything else that 51:49 we've talked about that makes this area special for fishing uh just so many places to go where there's nobody else 51:55 okay if you're on a lake every body has a fishing hole on that Lake you know on a cloudy day or sunny day or whatever 52:01 there's a spot yeah um here we have so many miles of creeks and or what we call 52:06 Creeks Rivers you can always find a place where there's nobody um we whine and cry on July 4th Memorial Labor Day 52:13 oh there's so many people on the water go to Lake Norman go to Lake Wy go to Florida you'll see what people on the 52:18 water are and our people for some reason are a little bit better um somehow how 52:25 how somehow getting on a boat means opening a beer in a lot of communities or a lot of places um in South Carolina 52:31 we have better boers I don't know why but they're out there to have fun in a little better way most of the time okay 52:37 we have a lot less accidents than uh some of those places that are packed like Norman every weekend is a nightmare 52:44 um same with all those Inland Lakes Myrtle Beach Miami Lauderdale uh it's absolutely awful the things that happen 52:51 here we have so much open space um as long as you stay away from anything that says rental on it you're sh yeah right 52:58 that's the truth how many AC accidents do you guys get like a month or something I mean we had only one last 53:04 year it was a July 4th accident and it did involve it somewhere between here and Savannah it did involve liquor at 53:09 10:00 a.m. okay um so when you eliminate liquor from uh voting for the captain 53:15 not for the people on board but for the captain you eliminate 99.9% of all bad 53:21 things that happen on the water yeah it's funny cuz I I I do I take it so seriously like that's like whenever I 53:26 got people on the boat it's like I'm locked in like I just don't want anything to happen because I did take 53:33 that safety course you know and you hear and it's like most of it you're like yeah it's totally avoidable you know you 53:39 just be smart about it it's like the Murdock case oh gosh that was the son 53:44 actually ran into a bridge yeah yeah cuz he was doing it night yep that was and that was a very experienced 18-year-old 53:50 he was experienced too a very experienced Boer but that shows you exactly what happens when liquor is involved that's right also night boating 53:56 he did that at night he did in a place that he'd been a thousand times at night nothing looks the same yeah can't tell 54:02 where you are yeah so what are some common mistakes that boers make um buying a boat instead of joining 54:09 a club is probably probably the biggest mistake they make and I do understand buying a boat if you are a super 54:15 hardcore fisherman you want all your gear on there and stuff like but short of being a hardcore fisherman or wanting 54:21 to go overnight or the overnight thing which again night boating is night boating um there is no reason mhm to not 54:29 be a member of a club whether it's ours or another one versus owning a boat the expense is a third or a fifth yeah of 54:37 what it cost to own your own boat and no worries every boater that owns a boat when he turns that key he's hoping it 54:43 starts yeah and it is and from there it just goes downhill I've heard um salt water salt 54:50 water and Sun are the most corrosive things in the world and you're sit in a boat in it 24 hours a day every day of 54:56 the year yeah just in and out and add three hours to just this little ice storm we had we 55:01 had probably 10 boats whose batteries went on them because the bill just kept kicking on and the batteries went with the coal they didn't recharge yeah um 55:08 you know not our members worry we took care of it all yeah yep and and that's the the other thing leads me to 55:13 maintenance you guys are constantly doing maintenance on these boats you'll take them out you'll take them out of 55:19 commission they're they're updated we don't have 20year old boats yeah how many so that's the other 55:27 thing too uh let's talk about the the ratio membership yeah we didn't talk about and the age and condition of we 55:34 can't speak for other clubs but we we um our goal is to maintain seven to one or 55:40 less that's great so seven members to one vessel or less to give you an example and she she's not going to 55:45 mention it but um our main competitor on the island is double that wow okay um 55:52 and I don't mean it in a bad way Know Who You Are I'm just I mean and they they also 55:58 they're they do exactly we we came in a little bit later than them they've been around longer than us um so reciprocal 56:04 they have more places around the country we have 140 or 150 they have like 300 um 56:10 but we've learned a lot from them and learn not to do what they did learn from 56:15 their mistakes right we actually run the marina and we lease to uh the other boat 56:20 club we see it firsthand every day we hear their customers what their grievances and we uh do everything we 56:28 can so that never happens to us okay that's great and so and going back to you have uh your primaries out of petto 56:34 bay and then you have a secondary location at least here locally out of uh the boat house it's SK freak okay and so 56:42 any you join one or the other you join the Carefree Club of Hilton Head and 56:47 then you have equal access to both that is not considered a reciprocal reservation to use one or the other you 56:54 those are both your be consider right pictures of all the boats will come up you can click on the boat house 57:00 or you can click on pom Bay and then you just pick the boat you want and off you go and that's on your app or you have an 57:05 app on that you can it's not technically an app you can access the website online we kre did have an app just for Androids 57:13 way back and yeah they said no one was using it and so everybody can get I was using it know am I the only one still 57:20 using he's the only Android on the island yeah that's thing has told me 57:25 that it's not coming back you can go online you know so uh yeah you but you can access online and we'll do that's 57:31 awes Android has the fish finder though I don't I never know if J because 57:39 they've all gone to Apple and I'm the hold out the kids are waiting but he takes my phone to do videos she does 57:45 have Superior video quality I'm not going to lie I'm like it's not long kids it's not long that's awesome so this has 57:53 been super super informative one last question for you guys would you share a special place that you like to go to off 58:01 off water and why off on the water on the water I mean sorry on the water 58:08 that's aism I personally love taking visitors 58:14 you know cuz when you live in Hilton Head people want to come to the beach so I have visitors a lot and I've lived all 58:19 over the place so um I personally like taking people on Bull Creek Loop that Tony T me 58:26 because it's so unique and it's so still and quiet on the back side of it so I 58:32 can start out going by Spanish Wells showing them all the beautiful homes and then we go wave at bluon and right 58:38 around Bull Creek Loop often times we'll stop swim you know whatever on the way 58:45 and then as we come out we can scoot over to defy and let them see that and have a scrap iron and be on the way so 58:52 explain what a scrap iron is oh that's the special drink of the Island for those 21 and can't believe we didn't 58:58 even talk we don't have time today talk my favorite okay that's no it's 59:07 okay this is yeah that's a good run yeah what's your favorite I wish I had a favorite 59:13 thing to do I mean uh just putting hours on boats the other day and I was with my kid the weather was bad my mother-in-law 59:20 and I didn't know what we're going to do and we had a blast we drove over to Savannah hung out on River Street walked got some chocolate came back stopped by 59:26 Def fusy played on the playground there went over to uh pometto Bluff to have lunch but of course Buffalo was closed 59:33 because they're never open um you can dock it hold on a second you can dock at B met Blu is it there's a public dock 59:40 that is a Buford County Dock and yes it's free that is also a great thing to know when you're to Google the public 59:46 doc at whatever because C Street Savannah Buford um Port Royal they all 59:54 have free dockage oh um paletto Bay our whole outside dock is uh we call it Dock 1:00:00 and dine um you're always welcome to come dock there and use our restaurants shelter Co is very good about letting 1:00:07 people dock um Harvard town occasionally will charge people yeah um but typically 1:00:12 not or they may not let you in if they're busy South Beach is free they have they 1:00:18 have a little little itty bitty signs that you can't read till you run into them lunch do um for four thought there 1:00:25 was TR but so you can go almost anywhere yeah I was going to add one 1:00:31 thing that I had not I don't anyway um is I like to put my bike on the boat 1:00:36 okay and then like take it to BU and then when you get there you have transportation oh that's idea we got to 1:00:43 do that done that done that around defy as well defy would be perfect to do that 1:00:49 I cannot wait toing us I don't go out when it's cold though 1:00:54 I can't do that fan of the cold either but catch what you said by the way you 1:01:00 took your child and your mother-in-law on a
